Sabre Corporation has elevated Fiona Richards to Regional Director for the South Pacific, placing the 20-year company veteran in charge of agency sales and airline distribution across Australia, New Zealand, and the broader South Pacific region. The appointment comes as the travel technology provider pushes deeper into AI-native retailing and NDC-enabled distribution.

Richards, who previously led Sabre's commercial team for strategic initiatives and premier customer relationships in the region, will now oversee the full portfolio of Sabre's travel marketplace capabilities. Her remit includes guiding travel agencies, tour operators, and corporate travel buyers through the shift from legacy booking systems to modern, offer-and-order-based retailing.

Customer success and AI adoption at the core

In her new role, Richards will prioritize strengthening customer and partner relationships while driving adoption of Sabre's next-generation AI-native travel marketplace. This includes supporting airlines and agencies as they implement NDC connections and leverage artificial intelligence for personalized offers and dynamic pricing.

Brett Thorstad, Sabre's Vice President of Agency Sales and Airline Distribution for Asia-Pacific, praised Richards' commercial track record and her role in shaping customer success across the region. "Her appointment reflects our commitment to developing exceptional talent from within the organisation," Thorstad said.

Richards herself emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in a market that is rapidly evolving. "I'm excited to lead a talented team focused on helping our customers navigate change, unlock new opportunities and build on Sabre's proud history in the region," she said.

The South Pacific has become a focal point for travel technology investment, with carriers such as Qantas and Air New Zealand rolling out NDC-based retailing strategies. Sabre's expanded presence in the region aligns with broader industry trends, including the rise of domestic travel resilience and the growing demand for AI-driven booking tools.

Richards' appointment also signals Sabre's intent to deepen its partnerships with travel sellers and suppliers in the region. Her previous work involved launching strategic initiatives that contributed to Sabre's growth and helped secure key accounts across Australia and New Zealand.

Industry observers note that the South Pacific market is ripe for technology-led transformation, as agencies seek to differentiate themselves through better data insights and streamlined workflows. Sabre's AI-native marketplace aims to address these needs by offering a unified platform for shopping, booking, and servicing.

Richards will report directly to Thorstad and will work closely with Sabre's airline and hospitality teams to ensure a cohesive approach across the region. Her leadership is expected to accelerate the adoption of Sabre's retailing solutions among mid-sized and enterprise travel agencies.

The move comes at a time when travel technology vendors are competing fiercely for market share in Asia-Pacific, with rivals like Amadeus and Travelport also investing heavily in NDC and AI capabilities. Sabre's decision to promote from within underscores its focus on continuity and deep regional knowledge.

For travel professionals in the South Pacific, Richards' appointment signals a continued push toward more sophisticated retailing tools. Agencies that embrace these technologies will be better positioned to offer personalized experiences and capture new revenue streams, particularly as travel demand across Asia-Pacific continues to climb.

Sabre has not announced any immediate changes to its product roadmap for the region, but Richards is expected to play a key role in shaping future developments. Her focus on customer success and innovation aligns with Sabre's broader strategy to become the leading technology platform for the global travel industry.
