Bangkok-based retail and real estate developer Siam Piwat has unveiled a $300 million investment in ICONPHUKET, a hybrid retail and entertainment destination on the island of Phuket. The project, scheduled to open in 2029, is part of the larger Synthesis Ark Phuket megaproject valued at over $1.5 billion, and is designed to elevate Phuket from a beach resort into a year-round global destination.

A new landmark for Southern Thailand

ICONPHUKET will feature 12 attractions spanning retail, entertainment, and cultural experiences, with a strong emphasis on showcasing the heritage and products of Southern Thailand's 14 provinces. The developer says the venue will serve as a platform for local artisans and businesses to reach international audiences, blending commercial appeal with regional identity.

The project is part of Synthesis Ark Phuket, a mixed-use development that includes residences, hotels, offices, and wellness facilities. More than 40% of the total site will be dedicated to green spaces, aligning with sustainable urban growth goals. Siam Piwat expects the development to generate between 50,000 and 80,000 jobs from construction through full operations.

Chadatip Chutrakul, CEO of Siam Piwat, said: "ICONPHUKET represents the next chapter of our vision to create destinations that generate economic value whilst showcasing Thailand's strengths to the world." The company projects daily visitor numbers of 80,000 to 100,000, which would significantly boost tourism and related economic activity in the region.

The announcement comes as Thailand's tourism sector continues to recover and diversify beyond traditional beach offerings. Phuket, already a major hub for international arrivals, is seeing increased investment in large-scale mixed-use projects. Siam Piwat's move mirrors similar trends elsewhere in Asia, such as Aldar's cultural district in Abu Dhabi, where retail and entertainment are being integrated into destination master plans.

For travel professionals, ICONPHUKET represents a significant addition to Phuket's MICE and leisure infrastructure. The project's scale and hybrid format could attract new events, conferences, and incentive travel, while its retail and cultural components offer agents and tour operators new selling points for the destination. The emphasis on local products and experiences also aligns with growing traveler demand for authentic, community-based tourism.

Siam Piwat is known for developing Bangkok's ICONSIAM, a riverside mega-mall that has become a major tourist draw since its opening in 2018. The company's experience in creating large-scale retail destinations positions it well for the Phuket project, which aims to replicate that success on a regional level.

Further details about ICONPHUKET, including specific attractions and tenant mix, are expected to be revealed in the coming months. The project is slated to break ground in the near term, with a target completion date of 2029.

As Phuket continues to evolve, developments like ICONPHUKET will be closely watched by hoteliers, airlines, and tour operators looking to capitalize on the island's growth. The project's integration of retail, entertainment, and culture could set a new benchmark for destination development in Southeast Asia.
