Singapore's River Wonders wildlife park is marking the birthdays of its resident giant pandas, Jia Jia and Kai Kai, with a series of events running through mid-September. The celebrations double as the launch pad for the Panda Planet Immersive Experience, an exhibition developed by iPanda under the China-Singapore Panda Relations initiative with Mandai Wildlife Group.
Jia Jia turns 18 on 5 September, while Kai Kai reaches 19 on 14 September. The park will host dedicated birthday festivities on those dates at the Pavilion Capital Giant Panda Forest, where visitors can watch the pair unwrap specially prepared gift boxes filled with treats designed to encourage natural foraging behaviour.
Panda Planet Immersive Experience
Running from 4 to 14 September, the Panda Planet Immersive Experience is presented across three themed zones. The Giant Panda Science Zone offers educational content on panda evolution and conservation efforts, while the Kai Kai & Jia Jia Birthday Zone shares updates on the pair, including news about Le Le, Singapore's first locally born panda cub, who returned to China in 2024. A third zone, the MR Experience Zone, uses mixed reality to give guests an interactive look at the pandas' natural habitat.
Guests can test their panda knowledge and take part in photo opportunities for a chance to win exclusive merchandise. The exhibition is included with standard River Wonders admission, which also provides vouchers for in-park purchases.
The event underscores the growing trend of wildlife attractions as tourism drawcards in Asia, particularly those with cross-border conservation narratives. For travel professionals, the initiative highlights how destination marketing can leverage charismatic species to drive family and leisure traffic.
Mandai Wildlife Group, which operates River Wonders alongside Singapore Zoo, Night Safari and Bird Paradise, has positioned the panda pair as flagship attractions since their arrival in 2012 under a 10-year loan agreement with China. The loan was extended in 2022, and the pandas are expected to remain in Singapore for another decade.
River Wonders, which focuses on freshwater ecosystems, has integrated the pandas into its broader conservation messaging. The park's location within the Mandai precinct, which is undergoing a major redevelopment, makes it a key component of Singapore's tourism infrastructure.
The birthday celebrations come at a time when Singapore's tourism sector is seeing a rebound in visitor arrivals, particularly from China, following the resumption of visa-free travel. The panda events are likely to appeal to both domestic visitors and international tourists, especially families.
For travel agents and tour operators, the exhibition offers a timely hook for packages that combine wildlife experiences with Singapore's urban attractions. The Mandai Wildlife Reserve's website provides further details on ticketing and programming.
As the travel industry increasingly looks to unique, educational experiences to differentiate offerings, the Panda Planet Immersive Experience serves as an example of how zoological parks can collaborate with international partners to create compelling, limited-time attractions.
