Singapore's appetite for European cruise holidays is on the rise, according to a YouGov survey commissioned by Royal Caribbean. The study, which polled 1,000 Singapore residents, found that 66% are attracted to the idea of multi-destination cruises in Europe, with convenience and reduced travel stress cited as the primary motivators.

The findings come as Royal Caribbean prepares to debut Legend of the Seas, the second vessel in its Icon Class, which will operate Mediterranean itineraries from Barcelona and Rome starting in 2026. The ship is designed to appeal to Asian travellers seeking efficient, immersive ways to explore Europe's cultural capitals.

Stress points in traditional travel

The survey underscores a broader dissatisfaction with conventional air travel. 91% of Singaporeans report experiencing stress during some part of their journey, with flight delays, luggage handling, and long layovers ranking as the top pain points. In contrast, cruises offer a bundled solution: 51% of respondents appreciate the inclusion of meals and entertainment, and the same share value the ability to unpack once while visiting multiple ports.

Ben Bouldin, President of Greater China and Managing Director for Asia at Royal Caribbean, commented: “Travellers value making the most of their time when exploring Europe. Multi-destination cruising continues to resonate because it offers seamless, enriching, and adventurous holidays.”

The survey also reveals a shift in intra-European transport preferences. Cruises now rank above trains and short-haul flights as a preferred mode of travel between European destinations, a trend that could influence how tour operators and travel agents package European itineraries for Asian clients.

Italy emerged as the top European destination of interest, with 47% of respondents keen to visit. Other popular countries include France, Spain, and Greece, reflecting a strong pull toward the Mediterranean's cultural and culinary offerings.

Onboard innovations target family and entertainment

Royal Caribbean is betting that Legend of the Seas' onboard features will further boost appeal. The ship will host America's Got Talent LIVE, a stage adaptation of the popular TV show, and the Surfside Neighbourhood, a dedicated family zone. Dining experiences such as the Royal Railway – Legend Station offer immersive culinary journeys, blending entertainment with gastronomy.

These additions align with broader industry trends. A recent Cruise.co.uk survey found that cost misconceptions remain a barrier for many potential cruisers, but experiential offerings are increasingly driving bookings. For Singapore agents, the Royal Caribbean data suggests a growing opportunity to position cruises as a stress-free alternative to multi-city air itineraries.

The survey's findings also resonate with other regional research. A Hilton survey indicated that Southeast Asian travellers plan to increase per-trip spending, and a related Royal Caribbean study highlighted Asia's broader appetite for European voyages. Together, these data points suggest a sustained growth trajectory for the cruise sector in Asia.

For travel professionals, the implications are clear: European cruises are no longer a niche product but a mainstream option for Singaporeans seeking efficient, enriching holidays. As Legend of the Seas prepares to set sail, agents and operators should consider how to integrate these itineraries into their offerings, particularly for families and multi-generational groups.
