Royal Caribbean International has released survey data indicating a strong and growing appetite among Asian travellers for European cruise holidays. The research, conducted by YouGov across Singapore, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, found that 74% of respondents view the concept of a European cruise as appealing, with a clear preference for multi-destination itineraries as a convenient way to see the continent.

Interest levels vary by market, with Indonesia leading at 82%, followed by the Philippines at 75%, Malaysia at 70%, India at 67%, and Singapore at 66%. The findings arrive as Royal Caribbean introduces its latest Icon Class vessel, Legend of the Seas, which will operate Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona and Rome starting in 2026.

Stress-free travel drives cruise appeal

The survey highlights a significant pain point for traditional travel: 87% of respondents find parts of conventional holidays stressful. Flight delays and cancellations top the list at 51%, followed by long layovers (38%) and the hassle of packing and unpacking (34%). Cruises offer a compelling alternative, with 42% of respondents appreciating the ease of visiting multiple destinations without constant rebooking, 38% valuing the avoidance of airport processes, and 35% enjoying the reduced need to pack and unpack.

Ben Bouldin, President of Greater China and Managing Director, Asia, for Royal Caribbean, commented: “Travellers are increasingly looking for holidays that are seamless, enriching, and full of adventure. Legend of the Seas offers Asian travellers a more accessible way to experience Europe without compromising on the holiday experience.”

The survey also underscores the importance of onboard experiences. Entertainment and dining options, such as America’s Got Talent LIVE and the Royal Railway immersive dining experience, are drawing significant interest from potential cruisers. This aligns with broader industry trends, as cruise lines expand their European offerings to cater to Asian demand. Norwegian Cruise Line, for instance, has reported earlier booking patterns from Asian guests for its Mediterranean and Alaska itineraries, as noted in our recent coverage of NCL's expansion.

For travel agents and tour operators, the data suggests a growing opportunity to package European cruises for Asian clients, particularly those seeking to avoid the logistical headaches of multi-city land trips. The appeal of a single cabin that moves between destinations is a strong selling point, as is the variety of onboard amenities that cater to family and multi-generational travel.

Royal Caribbean’s investment in the European market is part of a wider strategy to capture Asian outbound travel, which is rebounding strongly. The company’s focus on seamless experiences and diverse entertainment is designed to differentiate its product in a competitive landscape. As cruise travel continues to rise in popularity across Asia, offerings like Legend of the Seas provide a viable, stress-free alternative for those seeking a European adventure.
