TransNusa is expanding its international network with a new daily nonstop service linking Melbourne and Bali, set to launch on 19 October. The Indonesian carrier will also introduce its first-ever Premium Plus cabin on the route, targeting travellers who want more comfort without the full business-class fare.

Group CEO Bernard Francis confirmed that ticket sales are now open, describing the route as a key step in the airline's growth strategy. "The launch of the Melbourne-Bali route represents a monumental step forward in our international expansion strategy," Francis said in a statement. The service is designed to strengthen Bali's role as a gateway between Australia and Asia, a corridor that has seen steady demand from both leisure and corporate travellers.

Premium Plus: a new mid-market option

TransNusa's Premium Plus product includes priority check-in and boarding, an enhanced baggage allowance, and extra legroom, positioning it as a bridge between standard economy and traditional business class. Introductory fares start at AUD 299 (USD 191) for basic seats, while Premium Plus begins at AUD 699 (USD 448). The pricing is deliberately competitive, aiming to attract cost-conscious travellers who still value comfort on the roughly six-hour flight.

The move mirrors a broader industry trend of airlines introducing premium economy-style cabins to capture demand from travellers who are willing to pay more for space and convenience but balk at business-class prices. Emirates, for example, has been expanding its premium cabins to meet winter demand, and TransNusa's new offering is a similar play for the Australia-Bali market.

Schedule and connectivity

The flight schedule is tailored to both holidaymakers and business passengers. Flight 8B 18 departs Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport at 20:45, arriving in Melbourne at 05:40 local time, allowing for a full day of meetings or sightseeing. The return leg, Flight 8B 19, leaves Melbourne at 06:25 and lands in Bali at 09:40, giving travellers a morning arrival in time for beach or resort check-in.

Melbourne Airport has been actively courting new international carriers, and this route adds another option for the large Australian diaspora and the growing number of Indonesians travelling south. The service also complements TransNusa's existing Bali-Phuket link, which the airline launched earlier this year, further integrating Bali into its regional network.

For travel agents and tour operators, the new daily frequency provides more flexibility for package holidays and corporate travel. The Premium Plus cabin could appeal to small-business owners and frequent flyers who previously had to choose between cramped economy seats and expensive business fares on other carriers.

TransNusa's expansion comes as Bali continues to recover strongly from the pandemic, with visitor numbers approaching pre-COVID levels. The island's hospitality sector is also investing heavily, with properties like AYANA Bali adding cultural attractions to lure premium guests. The new air link is expected to support that momentum.

Industry observers will be watching how TransNusa's Premium Plus fares against competitors on the route, which include Jetstar, Virgin Australia, and Garuda Indonesia. The airline's strategy of offering a distinct product at a mid-range price could carve out a niche, especially for travellers who value the extra perks without the premium price tag.

With the launch date set for 19 October, TransNusa is moving quickly to fill seats. The carrier's daily schedule is a clear commitment to the market, and early booking data will indicate whether the Premium Plus concept resonates with Australian travellers.
