Turkish Airlines is expanding its footprint in mainland China with the addition of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, as its fourth destination in the country. The new service, set to commence on 11 November 2026, will connect Istanbul Airport with Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, complementing the carrier's existing routes to Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.

Chengdu, a metropolitan area of more than 21 million residents, serves as a major hub for trade, logistics, and finance, hosting numerous multinational corporations in sectors such as electronics and biotechnology. The city is also a UNESCO-designated "City of Gastronomy," celebrated for its Sichuan cuisine and as the home of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Strategic importance of China

Ahmet Olmuştur, CEO of Turkish Airlines, underscored the strategic significance of the Chinese market in the airline's network development. "With the launch of our flights to Chengdu, we are further strengthening our flight network in the country," he said. The airline will operate three weekly flights on the Istanbul–Chengdu route, using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft configured with 300 seats.

The new route is expected to enhance connectivity between Chengdu, Türkiye, and Turkish Airlines' extensive global network, which spans more than 340 destinations worldwide. For travel professionals, this adds a key gateway into western China, a region with growing demand for both business and leisure travel.

To mark the launch, Turkish Airlines is offering promotional fares starting from $540 in Economy Class and $1,991 in Business Class. These fares are available on the airline's official website and may vary at sales offices and travel agencies. Agents should note that the promotional pricing is designed to stimulate early bookings and may be subject to change.

The expansion comes amid a broader trend of increased air connectivity between China and international markets. For instance, factory tourism in China is booming, with summer bookings up 36%, reflecting growing interest in industrial and cultural experiences. Chengdu, with its blend of modern industry and traditional culture, is well-positioned to benefit from this trend.

Turkish Airlines' move also aligns with the recovery of China's outbound and inbound travel markets. While the country has seen a shakeout among travel agencies due to shifting demand, major carriers are nonetheless expanding their China networks, betting on long-term growth.

For travel advisors, the new route offers an additional option for clients seeking to explore Sichuan's attractions, including panda sanctuaries, historic sites, and culinary tours. The airline's extensive European network via Istanbul also provides convenient connections for travelers from across the continent.

Turkish Airlines has been steadily growing its Asia-Pacific presence, and Chengdu represents a logical next step given the city's economic importance and tourism appeal. The airline's CEO emphasized that China remains a priority market, and this new service underscores that commitment.

With the launch date set for 11 November 2026, travel professionals have ample time to incorporate the new route into their offerings. The airline is expected to release detailed schedules and fare rules closer to the launch, but the initial announcement provides a clear signal of its strategic direction.
