United Airlines has introduced a new patriotic livery on two of its aircraft to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The design, featuring 50 stars and diagonal stripes in red, white, and blue, has been applied to a Boeing 787-10 and a Boeing 737-800. The aircraft will also carry a commemorative plaque honoring active-duty service members and veterans.
The unveiling took place at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), with US Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy and United CEO Scott Kirby in attendance. Kirby commented, “America is the greatest country in the world, and we’re proud to play a role in celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary.”
Military Pilot Programme Gains Momentum
Alongside the livery launch, United highlighted progress in its United Military Pilot Programme. Since 2024, nearly 600 active-duty and reserve military pilots have transitioned to the airline through this initiative, which offers a conditional job offer as a First Officer. The carrier expects to add another 500 pilots by the end of 2027.
United currently employs over 8,300 military veterans, including 1,500 active members of the National Guard and Reserve forces. The programme provides flexibility for service members moving to civilian careers, with support for flight training and career mentorship.
Beyond hiring, United partners with organizations such as the USO and the Fisher House Foundation, providing more than 16,000 flights to military and veteran families in need. The airline also supports military groups through volunteerism and flight support.
This announcement comes as United continues to expand its global network and premium offerings. Earlier this year, United Polaris debuted 30 chef-curated dishes from global culinary stars, enhancing the long-haul experience for business-class passengers.
The Stars and Stripes livery joins a growing trend of commemorative aircraft designs in the US airline industry. Alaska Airlines debuted a World Cup 2026 livery on a Boeing 737-9 MAX, while American Airlines has partnered with FOX One for live World Cup 2026 streaming on flights, signaling how carriers are leveraging special liveries and in-flight experiences to build brand identity and engage travelers.
For travel professionals, United’s military hiring pipeline is a notable workforce development strategy, addressing pilot shortages while supporting veteran employment. The airline’s commitment to veteran hiring and community support reinforces its position as a major employer and partner in the travel ecosystem.
