Vietjet has inaugurated a direct air link between Hanoi and Tainan, positioning itself as the only Vietnamese carrier operating at Tainan Airport. The new service, which began on 25 October 2026, is set to deepen economic and cultural ties between Vietnam and southern Taiwan.

The inaugural flight, VJ1942, received a traditional water cannon salute on arrival in Tainan, underscoring the significance of the route for both airports. With four round-trip flights per week and a flight time of roughly two to three hours, the service offers a convenient option for travelers in both directions.

Network expansion and connectivity

Beyond the direct link, the route plugs Tainan into Vietjet's broader network, which spans Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, Australia, and Europe. Passengers from Tainan can now connect onward to a range of destinations across Vietnam and beyond, leveraging Vietjet's extensive route map.

Vietjet's CEO, Nguyen Thanh Son, highlighted the strategic importance of the new service: “Every new route connects more than two destinations on a map; it also opens up new opportunities for people, businesses and communities.” He added that the Hanoi–Tainan route is expected to stimulate tourism and economic exchange between the two markets.

The launch is part of a wider international push by Vietjet. The airline has recently started services to Almaty and Prague, and has announced upcoming routes including Ho Chi Minh City–Chiang Mai and Da Nang–Osaka, slated to begin by January 2027. These additions reflect Vietjet's ambition to grow its long-haul and regional footprint.

For travel professionals, the new Hanoi–Tainan link offers fresh opportunities for tour packaging and corporate travel, particularly for Taiwanese businesses with operations in Vietnam. Tainan, a major industrial hub, gains direct access to Hanoi's commercial and administrative centers, potentially boosting MICE travel and trade delegations.

Vietjet's modern fleet and competitive fare structure remain central to its growth strategy. The airline continues to invest in operational efficiency and customer experience, aiming to make air travel more accessible across the region.

Industry observers note that Vietjet's entry into Tainan could pressure other carriers to review their Taiwan–Vietnam schedules. The route also complements existing services from other Vietnamese points, offering more choice for passengers and cargo shippers.

As Vietjet expands its international network, it is also strengthening its supply chain partnerships. The carrier recently expanded its MOU with Satair to enhance aviation supply chain resilience in Vietnam, a move that supports its growing fleet and route network.

For agents and tour operators, the new service opens up Tainan as a gateway to southern Taiwan, complementing existing Taipei and Kaohsiung options. Combined with Vietjet's domestic Vietnamese network, the route enables seamless itineraries for multi-destination travel.

The Hanoi–Tainan launch also aligns with broader trends in Asia-Pacific aviation, where low-cost carriers are increasingly connecting secondary cities. Similar developments, such as the strong load factors on Xiamen–Los Angeles, highlight the demand for direct links beyond traditional hubs.

With its expanding route map and focus on affordability, Vietjet is well positioned to capture growing traffic between Vietnam and Taiwan. The airline's commitment to new routes, backed by a modern fleet and competitive pricing, continues to reshape regional air travel.
