Vietnam is rapidly emerging as a top-tier destination for large-scale international events, propelled by strategic infrastructure investments and government policy shifts. The country's MICE sector, currently valued at approximately $6 billion, is set for significant expansion as global event organizers eye the region's potential.

Infrastructure and Economic Foundations

At the heart of this transformation is the Vietnam Exposition Centre (VEC) in Hanoi, developed by Vingroup. Spanning 900,000 square metres, it ranks among Southeast Asia's largest event complexes. This facility, combined with political stability and consistent economic growth—averaging 6.4% annually over four decades—creates a compelling proposition for event planners. Dr Cấn Văn Lực, Chief Economist at BIDV, notes that per capita income has surpassed $5,000 and is projected to reach $8,500 by 2030, fueling demand for entertainment and live events.

The live entertainment industry alone generates over $50 million annually, supported by more than 700 large-scale events. The advertising market, valued at $3.5 billion, further underscores the country's commercial vibrancy.

Policy Reforms and Future Projects

Policy reforms are pivotal to Vietnam's strategy. The Politburo's Resolution No. 80 targets cultural industries contributing 7% of GDP by 2030, with measures including a VAT reduction to 5% and tax incentives for exhibitions and performances. Upcoming infrastructure projects, such as the Hùng Vương Stadium and PVF Stadium, will enhance capacity for international events. These developments align with broader trends in the MICE industry, as seen in other markets like AYANA Bali's new pillarless grand ballroom.

Geoff Dickinson, CEO of dmg events, commented: "The combination of national ambition and world-class infrastructure has the potential to transform the country into a major destination for global events." This sentiment is echoed by industry observers who see Vietnam as a rising competitor to established hubs like Singapore and Thailand.

Strategic Implications for Travel Professionals

For airline executives, hoteliers, and tour operators, Vietnam's ascent presents opportunities for route expansion, hotel development, and tailored packages. The country's young, affluent population and growing middle class are driving demand for premium experiences. As VEC targets the global MICE market, partnerships with global event organizers and travel technology providers will be crucial.

The MICE sector's growth also intersects with luxury travel trends. For instance, boutique resorts in the Maldives are joining global loyalty programs, reflecting a broader shift toward personalized, high-value experiences that Vietnam can emulate. Additionally, the country's culinary scene, recognized by the Michelin Guide 2026 with 11 one-star restaurants, adds a unique draw for event attendees.

As Vietnam continues to invest in infrastructure and refine its policy framework, it is poised to become a key player in the global events industry. Travel professionals should monitor these developments closely, as they signal a shift in the competitive landscape for MICE destinations in Asia.
