Viking is broadening its European river cruise portfolio with a suite of new experiences for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, moving beyond standard city tours to offer more immersive options. The enhancements include Zeppelin flights over Germany, food-focused shore excursions, small group tours, and expanded pre- and post-cruise land extensions. Bookings are now open across itineraries on the Rhine, Danube, Seine, and Elbe rivers.

Zeppelin Flights Over Germany

Viking’s most distinctive addition is a pair of Zeppelin airship flights available on select Rhine River itineraries. The first, a Zeppelin Flight Over the Ruhr Valley, departs from Essen/Mülheim Airport, ascending to about 1,000 feet to glide over Lake Baldeney, forests, and the historic Ruhr industrial region. Passengers will see Zeche Zollverein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often called the “Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr.” The second, a Zeppelin Flight Over Cologne, leaves from Bonn-Hangelar Airfield and offers aerial views of Cologne’s skyline, including the Trade Fair complex, Lanxess Arena, Hohenzollern Bridge, and Cologne Cathedral. These flights blend engineering heritage with scenic vistas, complementing the river experience.

New Shore Excursions: Culinary and Cultural Immersion

Starting in 2026, Viking is expanding its excursion menu with culinary and cultural experiences designed for deeper local engagement. Highlights include a dinner at Nikolaihof Winery in Austria’s Wachau Valley, where guests learn about biodynamic winemaking and enjoy seasonal estate-sourced cuisine. In Dürnstein, a guided walk through the 12th-century town and its medieval castle—linked to Richard the Lionheart—is followed by dinner at Alte Klosterkeller, a former monastery cellar. In Belgrade, a tour of Kalenić Market leads to a cooking class featuring traditional Serbian dishes. Other new excursions include a visit to Red Stone Castle in Slovakia’s Little Carpathians with local wine tasting, a Christmas-season food tour in Rouen featuring pastries and Normandy treats, and a Berlin food tour on the Elbe itinerary that stops at Lindner, EAT Berlin, and Curry 61 for currywurst.

Small Group Experiences

Viking is also introducing Small Group Experiences on select European river itineraries from 2026, offering more intimate access to major landmarks. Options include guided tours of the Palace of Versailles, Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, the medieval town of Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic, Colmar’s half-timbered houses and canals in France, and a relaxed visit to Bratislava’s old town. These experiences cater to travelers who prefer smaller groups at iconic sites.

Land Extensions: Alps, Wine Regions, and Cultural Cities

Viking is strengthening its pre- and post-cruise land extensions, turning week-long river sailings into broader European journeys. New fully guided extensions launching in 2026 and 2027 include a St. Moritz, Lombardy & Alpine Train extension featuring the Bernina Express along a UNESCO-listed route, Chur’s old town, St. Moritz’s mountain scenery, and Milan. A Croatia & Slovenia extension covers Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Radovljica, Zagreb’s medieval old town, and Festetics Palace in Keszthely. The Best of Belgium extension explores Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp, with UNESCO-listed medieval cores and canals. The Best of Holland extension includes Delft and its Royal Dutch Delftware Manufactory, Gouda’s heritage, and stroopwafel tastings.

These additions reflect Viking’s strategy to differentiate its river cruise product with unique, high-value experiences. For travel professionals, the new offerings present opportunities to upsell clients on premium excursions and extended land packages. As the river cruise market grows, Viking’s focus on experiential travel—from Zeppelin flights to biodynamic wine dinners—positions it to attract both first-time cruisers and loyal repeat guests.
