Eight young carers from Caerphilly County Borough have returned from a five-day sailing expedition across the English Channel, having earned a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Start Yachting Award. The voyage, organized by the Tall Ships Youth Trust, took the group from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight and Alderney aboard a Challenger yacht, offering a hands-on introduction to life at sea.

Hands-on sailing experience

During the journey, the young carers took on active crew roles, learning to steer the vessel, handle sails, and navigate. They also participated in anchor watches and overnight shifts, and shared daily duties such as cooking and cleaning. The itinerary included exploring the towns of Alderney and Cowes, swimming in the Channel, and even witnessing a solar eclipse and meteor shower from the deck.

The initiative was a collaborative effort involving Caerphilly Adventures, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Young Carers team, The Outdoor Partnership, the Reardon Smith Bursary, Freemasons Charity, and the Tall Ships Youth Trust. It aligns with the council’s Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019-2029, which seeks to broaden access to physical activities for residents.

Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure, praised the achievement: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the young carers to take on new challenges, build their confidence and enjoy time away from their everyday responsibilities. We are extremely proud of everything they achieved.”

The experience not only equipped the participants with sailing skills but also fostered confidence, independence, resilience, communication, and teamwork—qualities that will serve them well in their future endeavours. For travel professionals, this story underscores the growing niche of purpose-driven youth travel and adventure education, a segment that continues to gain traction among tour operators and cruise lines.

Adventure travel providers are increasingly tailoring programmes for specific groups, such as young carers, to deliver transformative experiences. This trend is reflected in the broader cruise and expedition market, where operators like Ponant and others are seeing a surge in expert-led voyages. Similarly, the Tall Ships Youth Trust’s model of hands-on crewing offers a template for experiential travel that goes beyond traditional sightseeing.

For agents and tour operators, such initiatives highlight the potential of partnering with charities and local authorities to create meaningful travel opportunities. The success of this voyage may inspire similar collaborations, particularly in the UK, where youth development through sailing has a strong heritage.

As the travel industry continues to evolve, experiences that combine skill-building with personal growth are becoming a key differentiator. Whether it’s a Channel crossing for young carers or a loyalty programme relaunch by Virgin Voyages, the focus on enriching journeys is clear. This story also resonates with the broader trend of cruise lines dropping solo supplements to attract a wider demographic, including solo travellers seeking adventure.

The Caerphilly voyage is a testament to the power of travel to transform lives, and it offers a compelling case study for the industry. As more organisations recognise the value of such experiences, we can expect to see a rise in purpose-led travel programmes across the sector.
