Air Mauritius has confirmed the expansion of its non-stop service from London Gatwick (LGW) to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), working alongside the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA). The announcement, made during a UK meeting with hoteliers, travel agents, and media, signals a strategic push to diversify the island's visitor base and embed sustainability into its tourism model.
Capacity and Frequency Enhancements
The carrier currently operates up to five weekly non-stop rotations on the route, providing 159,164 seats annually. Laurent Recoura, Chief Commercial Officer of Air Mauritius, confirmed plans to increase flight frequency and upgrade the business class cabin. “We are proud to connect Mauritius to the world with greater convenience and comfort,” Recoura said.
This route expansion aligns with broader trends in long-haul travel, where carriers like Riyadh Air are also adding new non-stop services to key markets. For Air Mauritius, the London Gatwick link remains a critical gateway for European leisure and corporate traffic.
Regenerative Tourism and New Market Focus
MTPA Chairman Dinesh Burrenchobay emphasised the collaborative effort: “Working closely with Air Mauritius allows us to offer seamless travel options while advancing our regenerative tourism agenda.” The new strategy pivots toward wellness and sports tourism, including golf, kitesurfing, and diving, as well as meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) groups.
Mauritius, with its blend of African, Asian, and European cultural influences, is positioning itself beyond beach holidays. The MTPA is committed to sustainability initiatives that benefit local ecosystems and communities, aiming for a regenerative model that goes beyond traditional eco-tourism.
For travel agents and tour operators, the enhanced airlift opens opportunities to package active holidays and corporate retreats. The island's MICE infrastructure, combined with direct flights, makes it a competitive option for incentive travel planners.
Global Marketing Campaign and WTM Presence
Air Mauritius and MTPA will showcase their initiatives at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London this November, alongside a global marketing campaign. The event will highlight the island's new tourism narrative and the airline's expanded role in delivering it.
This development comes as other destinations in the Indian Ocean compete for European traffic. The partnership between a national carrier and tourism authority mirrors strategies seen in other markets, such as Nepal's fixed-departure tours, where coordinated airlift and ground product development drive growth.
For hoteliers and resort operators in Mauritius, the increased seat capacity and marketing push are expected to boost occupancy across luxury and mid-scale properties. The focus on wellness and sports tourism also aligns with product offerings from properties like Trisara Phuket, which have successfully integrated destination-led experiences.
Air Mauritius' commitment to non-stop connectivity from London Gatwick reinforces the island's accessibility for both leisure and business travellers. With planned frequency increases and cabin upgrades, the carrier is betting on sustained demand from the UK market.
