Alipay has unveiled what it describes as China's first full-stack agentic commerce platform, a move that signals a significant shift in how merchants can leverage artificial intelligence to run their operations. Announced at the AI Ecosystem Partner Conference in Hangzhou, the platform provides a suite of AI business tools designed to help merchants move from digital to AI-powered operations, enhancing customer insights, product recommendations, and membership management.

The platform aims to transform the commercial ecosystem by connecting millions of consumers with merchants through AI agents. Cyril Han, CEO of Ant Group, highlighted the potential for rapid growth in agentic commerce, stating, "AI agents will become a new interface connecting hundreds of millions of users with tens of millions of merchants." This vision positions Alipay at the forefront of a new wave of AI-driven commerce, with implications for travel and hospitality brands that rely on Alipay for payments and customer engagement.

Merchant flexibility and AI integration

Merchants can independently select AI tools that suit their needs, with the platform offering solutions for those with existing digital operations but lacking AI capabilities. For businesses already using AI, the platform supports AI agent creation, skill orchestration, and task execution. This flexibility is crucial for travel companies that operate across multiple channels and need to adapt quickly to changing consumer behaviors.

The platform integrates with Alipay's Ah Bao ecosystem, allowing merchants to reach consumers across various devices, including smartphones and AI glasses. Ah Bao, launched in June 2026, is a super service AI agent that facilitates access to over 10,000 AI-powered services. Retail brands like KFC and Luckin Coffee have already integrated their services into Ah Bao, enabling seamless transactions through natural conversations. For travel brands, this could mean more intuitive booking and customer service experiences, potentially reducing friction in the travel journey.

Alipay also announced an AI Business Incentive Programme to support developers and merchants entering the AI ecosystem, offering incentives such as free tokens and reduced payment fees. This initiative underscores Alipay's commitment to fostering an AI-driven commerce environment, promising significant advancements in merchant operations and consumer interactions.

For travel professionals, the development is noteworthy as Alipay is a dominant payment platform in China and increasingly used by international travelers. The ability to deploy AI agents for personalized recommendations and membership operations could help hotels, airlines, and tour operators enhance their direct booking channels and loyalty programs. As AI chat booking tools gain traction in corporate travel, Alipay's platform may offer similar capabilities for consumer-facing travel services.

The platform's integration with Ah Bao also aligns with broader trends in travel technology, where AI is being used to streamline everything from loyalty program expansions to safety data integration. As AI becomes more embedded in travel operations, platforms like Alipay's could become essential for merchants looking to stay competitive.

While the initial focus is on retail, the travel industry is likely to be a major beneficiary. With the rise of MICE incentives and the growing importance of seamless digital experiences, Alipay's agentic commerce platform could help travel businesses meet evolving consumer expectations. The company's investment in AI infrastructure signals a long-term commitment to transforming how merchants interact with customers, a trend that travel professionals should monitor closely.
