Berlin has secured the top spot in Pettitts Travel's 2026 ranking of luxury opera destinations, surpassing Paris and London. The German capital achieved a perfect score of 10 out of 10, driven by 98 scheduled performances this year, seven dedicated opera venues, and an average venue rating of 4.7 out of 5 on Google reviews.

Key Factors Behind Berlin's Lead

The study evaluated destinations on performance volume, venue quality, and supporting luxury infrastructure. Berlin's three flagship houses—Deutsche Oper, Komische Oper, and Staatsoper Unter den Linden—were cited as major draws for both seasoned aficionados and first-time attendees. The city's high cultural rating and concentration of high-end dining and accommodation options contributed to its perfect score.

Paris earned 8.8 points, buoyed by 73 performances and 519 Michelin-starred restaurants. London followed with 8.7 points, offering 56 performances across nine venues, including the Royal Opera House and Opera Holland Park. The ranking underscores a broader resurgence in opera tourism, with younger audiences increasingly engaging with the art form.

David Pettitt, Head of Product at Pettitts Travel, commented: “It’s certainly an exciting time for opera lovers – we’re seeing its resurgence in a younger generation of opera lovers as it becomes more ingrained in pop-culture.”

For travel professionals, the findings highlight opportunities to package opera experiences with luxury stays and fine dining. Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden, for instance, sits near top-tier hotels such as the Hotel Adlon Kempinski, while Paris's Palais Garnier is within walking distance of the Ritz Paris. London's Royal Opera House in Covent Garden offers proximity to properties like The Savoy.

The trend aligns with broader shifts in luxury travel toward cultural immersion. Operators like Scott Dunn have noted that clients increasingly seek emotional value through curated experiences, and opera holidays fit this demand. Similarly, hotel groups such as Elegant Hotels of the World are rebranding to strengthen their luxury soft-brand offerings, which could complement bespoke opera packages.

As opera continues to gain traction among younger demographics, destinations like Berlin, Paris, and London are expected to maintain their status as leading hubs for luxury opera travel. Travel advisors and tour operators may consider bundling tickets with premium accommodations and Michelin-starred dining to capture this growing market.
