Tokyo Skytree has unveiled a large-scale Chiikawa-themed experience, transforming the iconic tower into an immersive destination for fans of the popular Japanese character. Running from 10 July to 31 October 2026, the event spans multiple floors and includes themed installations, interactive screenings, and exclusive food and beverage offerings.
Immersive zones across the tower
The adventure begins at the TEMBO GALLERIA, located 450 metres above ground, where floors 445 to 450 have been redesigned to evoke Chiikawa's mysterious island journey. Visitors can explore hidden caves, encounter unexpected challenges, and pose for photos with character displays against the panoramic Tokyo skyline. The installation is designed to appeal to both dedicated fans and casual tourists seeking a unique vantage point.
On Floor 350, the SKYTREE ROUND THEATRE® presents a six-minute Chiikawa screening projected onto the tower's windows. The show blends animation with the glittering cityscape, creating a visual experience that leverages the tower's height and glass architecture. This format is a departure from traditional static exhibits and offers a dynamic way to engage visitors.
Night-time illumination and themed dining
After dark, the exterior of Tokyo Skytree will be illuminated with special lighting inspired by Chiikawa and other familiar characters. The colours change every 100 seconds, providing a dynamic visual treat for evening visitors and enhancing the tower's presence in the Tokyo skyline. This nightly display is expected to draw both tourists and locals, potentially boosting evening footfall in the surrounding area.
The experience continues at SKYTREE CAFE on Floor 340, where a selection of collaboration dishes and drinks are available. Menu highlights include strawberry-topped pink lemonade and Starry Beach seafood curry, both tied to the secret-island theme. Selected orders come with limited-edition bonuses, such as original coasters, while stocks last. The F&B component adds a revenue stream beyond ticket sales and encourages longer dwell times.
Strategic tourism impact
Tokyo Skytree is one of Japan's most visited landmarks, and this event underscores the growing trend of character-based IP collaborations in the travel industry. Similar partnerships have proven successful in other markets, such as the coffee-themed Singapore itineraries launched by Citadines and Monster Day Tours. The Chiikawa event is expected to attract domestic repeat visitors as well as international tourists, particularly from markets where the character has a strong following.
The timing of the event, spanning the summer and autumn seasons, aligns with peak travel periods in Japan. As Japan's regional destinations gain ground while Tokyo remains a key gateway, this event reinforces Tokyo's appeal as a primary entry point for international visitors. The tower's operator, Tobu Tower Skytree, has not disclosed attendance projections, but similar IP events at major landmarks have historically driven significant visitor numbers.
For travel professionals, the event offers a ready-made itinerary component for clients visiting Tokyo. Tour operators and agents can bundle the Skytree experience with other city attractions, while hoteliers in the Sumida area may see increased demand. The event also complements the recent expansion of Finnair's Tokyo network to 32 weekly flights by summer 2027, which will bring more European travellers to the city.
The Chiikawa-themed event at Tokyo Skytree is a prime example of how landmarks can leverage pop-culture IP to create fresh, repeatable experiences. With its combination of immersive storytelling, dining, and nightly illumination, it is set to be a highlight of Tokyo's 2026 tourism calendar. The event runs until 31 October 2026, and tickets are available through the official Tokyo Skytree website.
