Dida, the AI-first travel technology group, and Tsinghua x-lab have unveiled the Future Traveller Global Challenge, a competition designed to accelerate the journey from AI prototype to production in travel. The initiative, part of a five-year strategic partnership, invites student teams from Tsinghua University and more than 50 European universities to solve real operational problems drawn from Dida's international business.

The challenge, themed “AI Travel 2030: Travel Innovation in the Age of AI Agents,” focuses on issues such as dynamic inventory changes and complex cancellation rules. Daryl Lee, Group CEO of Dida Holdings, stressed the practical nature of the competition: “We are handing students the same problems our own engineers are working on, and the strongest solutions will have the opportunity to make their way into production.”

Two tracks, real-world impact

Participants can enter one of two tracks. The Business Innovation Track asks teams to rethink the online travel value chain, while the Technology Track focuses on building next-generation travel agent solutions. Both tracks will be judged on feasibility, innovation, and potential for deployment.

Winning teams will see their solutions tested in Dida's live operations, with pathways to production, internships, and support from the Ecovacs X-man Accelerator. Participants also get free access to Alibaba ModelScope resources, giving them the tools to build and iterate quickly.

The competition's structure reflects Dida's expansion in Europe, one of its fastest-growing markets. The semi-final will take place in Paris on 28 and 29 October, with the global final in China in November. Registration runs from 1 to 14 September, and submissions can be project proposals or demo videos.

This initiative is part of a broader trend of travel companies partnering with academic institutions to foster AI talent. For example, Alipay's agentic commerce platform is another example of AI-driven innovation in travel-related services. Similarly, MakeMyTrip's guided tours show how technology and partnerships are reshaping the travel experience.

Dida's move also highlights the growing importance of AI in travel distribution and operations. As airlines, hotels, and tour operators seek to streamline processes and personalize offerings, competitions like this can uncover fresh approaches. The challenge's focus on real-world scenarios ensures that solutions are not just theoretical but can be applied immediately.

For travel professionals, the Future Traveller Global Challenge signals a shift toward collaborative innovation. By opening its internal problems to students, Dida is not only nurturing talent but also potentially gaining a competitive edge. The results could influence how travel companies approach AI adoption in the coming years.

Interested teams can find more details on the Dida and Tsinghua x-lab websites. The competition is open to students from Tsinghua and partner European institutions, with a strong emphasis on cross-cultural collaboration.
