Eden Camp, the preserved WWII prisoner-of-war site near Malton, North Yorkshire, has announced a dedicated summer programme titled 'Women at War', running from 17 July to 31 August. The initiative aims to spotlight the often-overlooked contributions of women who kept Britain operational during the conflict.

Interactive Activities and Family Engagement

The programme features a range of hands-on experiences designed for families and history enthusiasts. Among the highlights is the 'Women at War Poo Clues Trail', an educational scavenger hunt inspired by the Women's Land Army. Participants follow clues that reveal how women managed farms and food production. Additionally, the 'Little Evacuees Workshop' invites children to craft cardboard gas masks and learn about wartime rationing, offering a tangible connection to life on the Home Front.

Museum Manager Nick Hill commented, "Our Women at War programme is full of hands-on and interactive activities that bring history to life for all ages." The camp, which welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually, has been recognised as the Best Educational Day Out for three consecutive years.

Pricing and Accessibility

Eden Camp is participating in the Great British Summer Savings scheme, applying a full VAT reduction to make visits more affordable. Advance tickets are priced at £14.75 for adults and £13 for children, with family tickets available from £26.25. This pricing strategy aligns with broader efforts to boost domestic tourism, similar to initiatives like VisitBritain's hosting of Indian travel leaders to promote regional destinations.

The site received £224,000 in funding from North Yorkshire Council to restore its original huts, preserving its authenticity as a historical attraction. For travel professionals, Eden Camp represents a model of how heritage tourism can drive repeat visits and educational group bookings.

Industry Context

As summer programming becomes a key driver for attractions across the UK, Eden Camp's focus on women's history taps into a growing demand for diverse narratives. The camp's approach mirrors trends seen in other sectors, such as Tauck's expansion of women-only tours, reflecting a broader industry shift toward niche, experience-led travel. For tour operators and agents, this programme offers a compelling product for family and educational segments, particularly those seeking value-added experiences during the summer peak.

Eden Camp's location in North Yorkshire also positions it within a region that has seen increased investment in tourism infrastructure. The camp's ability to combine historical education with interactive fun makes it a standout option for school trips and multigenerational travel. With advance booking discounts and VAT savings, the attraction is well-placed to capture both domestic and international visitors exploring the UK's heritage offerings.
