Emirates is deepening its commitment to the Sri Lankan market with the addition of a second daily Airbus A350 service on the Dubai–Colombo route, effective August 8. The new flight, designated EK648/649, will replace an existing Boeing 777 rotation, effectively doubling the number of daily A350 frequencies and expanding access to the carrier’s Premium Economy cabin.
The move comes just months after Emirates introduced the A350 on the Colombo route in March 2025, marking the aircraft’s debut in the market. With four daily flights now operating between Dubai International (DXB) and Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), the airline is reinforcing its position as a key gateway for Sri Lanka, connecting Colombo to nearly 140 destinations across its global network.
Premium Economy Expansion Drives Comfort and Choice
The additional A350 service is particularly significant for business and leisure travellers seeking the Premium Economy experience. Emirates’ Premium Economy cabin features a 2-3-2 layout with cream leather seats, woodgrain finishes, 13.3-inch personal screens, and six-way adjustable headrests. Passengers also receive a welcome drink, seasonal menus, and an exclusive amenity kit. By doubling the number of daily flights with this product, Emirates is responding to growing demand for premium travel options on the Colombo route.
The A350 itself offers bright, spacious cabins with wider aisles, ultra-responsive 4K touchscreens, and faster WiFi connectivity. Inflight entertainment includes content in Tamil and Sinhala, catering to the local market. The aircraft’s advanced technology and fuel efficiency align with Emirates’ broader sustainability goals, as the airline continues to modernize its fleet.
This year also marks Emirates’ 40th anniversary of operations to Colombo, a milestone that underscores the carrier’s long-term investment in Sri Lanka. The route has historically been a strong performer for the airline, supported by both diaspora traffic and tourism demand.
For travel professionals, the expanded A350 schedule offers more inventory in a premium cabin that commands higher yields. Agents and tour operators can leverage the enhanced product to upsell clients, particularly those traveling for business, leisure, or visiting friends and relatives (VFR). The improved onboard experience, including faster WiFi and larger screens, also appeals to corporate travellers who value productivity during long-haul flights.
Emirates’ fleet modernization continues with the A350, which complements its existing widebody mix of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s. The airline has also been investing in connectivity, recently surpassing 1 million Starlink connections and planning live TV on ice, as reported in Emirates Hits 1 Million Starlink Connections. Meanwhile, the carrier’s cargo division, Emirates SkyCargo, recently debuted its first converted 777-300ER freighter to boost capacity, as covered in Emirates SkyCargo Debuts First Converted 777-300ER Freighter.
The additional A350 service to Colombo is a clear signal that Emirates sees sustained demand in South Asia, a region where it competes with carriers such as SriLankan Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Etihad. For industry stakeholders, the move highlights the importance of premium cabin differentiation in a competitive market.
