Etihad Airways, in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi, has introduced a complimentary medical travel insurance program for all international passengers arriving in Abu Dhabi on Etihad-operated flights. The initiative, underwritten by The National Insurance Company – Daman, automatically covers eligible visitors for up to 15 days, running from July through December 2026.
The program is designed to streamline the travel experience by providing immediate health coverage upon arrival. It applies to any guest flying to Abu Dhabi on an Etihad service, provided both the point of origin and point of sale are outside the United Arab Emirates. Travellers using Etihad’s Stopover Programme are also included for the duration of their stay.
Executive Perspectives on the Initiative
His Excellency Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi, stated, “This initiative ensures we meet that demand with an exceptional, end-to-end visitor experience.” Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, emphasised the seamless nature of the offering, allowing guests to focus on enjoying Abu Dhabi’s hospitality without logistical concerns.
Khaled Ateeq Aldhaheri, CEO of The National Insurance Company – Daman, highlighted the value of integrating reliable medical insurance into the travel journey, enhancing the visitor experience with access to comprehensive medical services. This partnership underscores Etihad and DCT Abu Dhabi's commitment to prioritising visitor experience, making Abu Dhabi an even more attractive destination with its rich heritage and modern attractions.
The move aligns with broader efforts to boost tourism in the emirate, which has seen increased investment in attractions such as Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and luxury real estate developments. For travel professionals, this insurance offering reduces a key friction point for international travellers, potentially increasing booking confidence for both leisure and business segments.
Industry observers note that such value-added services are becoming more common as carriers and destinations compete for high-yield travellers. Similar initiatives have been seen in other markets, such as Qatar Airways' route expansions and targeted campaigns like Kaohsiung's visitor growth strategy. For agents and tour operators, this development simplifies trip planning for clients heading to Abu Dhabi, removing the need for separate travel insurance purchases for short stays.
The insurance covers a range of medical services, though specific policy details should be reviewed by travel advisors to ensure alignment with client needs. With the program running through the end of 2026, it provides a stable offering for the upcoming travel seasons.
