Etihad Airways has deepened its African footprint through a multi-layered partnership with Fastjet Zimbabwe, signed in Harare on 7 July 2026. The agreement encompasses an interline arrangement, a codeshare component, and reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, enabling passengers to book seamless itineraries across Zimbabwe and to Johannesburg on a single ticket. Sales for the new connectivity begin 24 August 2026.

Network expansion via Harare hub

The partnership allows Etihad guests to connect beyond Harare to Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, and Johannesburg via Fastjet Zimbabwe’s domestic and regional network. This move precedes Etihad’s planned direct service between Abu Dhabi and Harare, set to launch on 24 March 2027, which will further anchor the carrier’s presence in Southern Africa.

For Fastjet Zimbabwe, the deal unlocks access to Etihad’s global route map spanning the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Fastjet passengers will also be eligible for Etihad’s Abu Dhabi Stopover programme, which offers up to two complimentary hotel nights in the UAE capital — a valuable incentive for leisure and transit travellers.

Executive perspectives on the partnership

Arik De, Etihad Airways Chief Revenue & Commercial Officer, underscored Africa’s strategic importance: “Africa is an important part of Etihad’s growth, and partnerships like this one with Fastjet Zimbabwe are how we extend our reach and open up more of the continent for our guests.”

Donahue Cortes, CEO of Fastjet Zimbabwe, expressed confidence that the collaboration would improve connectivity and strengthen Zimbabwe’s international links. Vivian Ruwuya, Fastjet’s Chief Commercial Officer, added: “This partnership opens up the world for our customers in Zimbabwe.”

Implications for travel trade and corporate clients

The interline and codeshare structure simplifies booking for travel agents and corporate travel managers, allowing single-ticket issuance for multi-sector journeys that combine Etihad’s long-haul flights with Fastjet’s regional services. This is particularly relevant for MICE groups and business travellers requiring efficient connections to Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls.

Etihad’s broader African strategy mirrors moves by other Gulf carriers. For context, Qatar Airways Restores Canberra Service, Rebuilding Full Australia Network illustrates how Middle Eastern airlines are rebuilding connectivity across continents. Similarly, Emirates Expands A350 Service to Colombo with Second Daily Flight shows the region’s capacity-focused expansion.

Operational timeline and booking details

Travel under the partnership will be available from 24 August 2026. The codeshare will initially cover Fastjet-operated flights, with reciprocal frequent flyer accrual and redemption. Etihad’s direct Abu Dhabi–Harare route, slated for 24 March 2027, will provide the long-haul backbone for the partnership, offering a one-stop connection from key Asian and European markets into Zimbabwe.

For Fastjet, the agreement provides a growth lever beyond its current network. The carrier has been expanding its footprint in Southern Africa, and this partnership gives it a competitive edge against regional rivals by offering seamless onward connectivity via Abu Dhabi.

The deal also aligns with broader trends in African aviation, where interline and codeshare agreements are increasingly used to bypass infrastructure constraints and regulatory hurdles. As airlines like Malaysia Airlines Adds Shenzhen and Changsha Routes, Boosting China Network to Nine Gateways demonstrate, network partnerships remain a key tool for expanding reach without adding metal.

Travel industry professionals should note that the partnership’s success will depend on seamless baggage handling, schedule alignment, and consistent service standards across both carriers. Etihad’s reputation for premium service and Fastjet’s low-cost model will require careful integration to meet the expectations of business and leisure travellers alike.
