Garmin has introduced the AXIS flight display system, a fully integrated cockpit solution that merges primary flight display (PFD), IFR GPS, NAVCOMM, and audio panel capabilities into a single unit. Launched on 8 July 2026, the system targets both certified and experimental aircraft operators seeking to reduce panel complexity and weight while enhancing situational awareness.

Three Display Sizes and Flexible Configuration

The AXIS system is offered in three display sizes: an 11.6-inch landscape, an 8-inch portrait, and an 8-inch landscape. Each can be configured as either a PFD or multifunction display (MFD), giving operators flexibility in panel layout. The displays combine responsive touchscreens with physical controls, allowing pilots to interact through touch or traditional buttons and knobs.

For certified aircraft, the 11.6-inch units have received FAA and EASA Technical Standard Order (TSO) approval and are available from July 2026. The 8-inch displays are expected to follow in early 2027. Experimental aircraft operators can also install the system, broadening its market reach across general aviation.

Integrated IFR GPS, NAVCOMM, and Audio Panel

A key differentiator of AXIS is the integration of IFR GPS, COMM radio, NAV radio, and audio panel into a single display. This consolidation simplifies installation, reduces wiring, and lowers overall aircraft weight. The system supports standby COMM monitoring and Bluetooth connectivity for music and phone calls, adding convenience for pilots.

Carl Wolf, Garmin's Vice President of Aviation Sales, Marketing, and Support, stated: "AXIS sets the new standard for what pilots can expect from an integrated flight display system." The system also includes advanced navigation functions such as Smart Glide, which automatically guides the aircraft to the nearest suitable aerodrome during engine emergencies, and Runway Occupancy Awareness, which alerts pilots to potential incursions.

Safety and Engine Management Features

The AXIS system incorporates an Engine Indication System (EIS) that provides real-time engine data, enabling better engine management and early detection of anomalies. These safety features align with broader industry trends toward enhanced cockpit automation and pilot assistance, particularly relevant for operators of business jets, turboprops, and high-performance piston aircraft.

For travel industry professionals, the AXIS system represents a notable advancement in avionics that could influence fleet upgrade decisions for charter operators, fractional ownership programs, and corporate flight departments. Airlines and tour operators that rely on smaller aircraft for regional connectivity may also consider the system for their fleets.

As Garmin continues to expand its aviation portfolio, the AXIS system positions the company to compete directly with established avionics manufacturers such as Honeywell, Collins Aerospace, and Avidyne. The integration of multiple functions into a single display could drive adoption among operators seeking to modernize cockpits without extensive rewiring.
