Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has expanded its footprint in Himachal Pradesh with the signing of a new Taj hotel in Dharamshala. The brownfield project, developed in partnership with Atman Resort & Cottages LLP, will feature 105 keys and is expected to cater to the growing demand for premium accommodation in the region.
Heritage Restoration and Modern Amenities
The Taj Dharamshala will restore the heritage wing known as White Haven Estate, which served as the Viceroy’s summer residence in the late 1800s. The property will offer panoramic views of the valley and the Dhauladhar range. Guests will have access to an all-day dining restaurant, two speciality restaurants, a bar, and a lobby lounge. Recreational facilities include an indoor temperature-controlled swimming pool, a gym, and the signature J Wellness Circle spa. For MICE events, the hotel will provide a banquet hall, terrace, pre-function spaces, and meeting rooms.

Strategic Expansion in Himachal Pradesh
With this signing, IHCL’s presence in Himachal Pradesh now totals 27 hotels, including 12 under development. Dharamshala, known for its scenic beauty, is home to the Dalai Lama's residence, Namgyal Monastery, Bhagsu Waterfall, Dal Lake, and the popular trekking destination Triund. The new Taj property is expected to boost local tourism and create new opportunities for the community.
This development aligns with broader trends in the Indian hospitality sector, where major players are expanding into secondary leisure destinations. For instance, Marriott International recently crossed the 10,000-property mark with the opening of JW Marriott Ranthambore Resort & Spa in India, highlighting the growing interest in experiential travel. Similarly, Leisure Hotels Group opened the Samsara Resort in Mussoorie, further diversifying Uttarakhand’s hospitality landscape.
The Taj Dharamshala is poised to become a key player in the region’s luxury segment, offering a blend of heritage and modern comfort. As IHCL continues to strengthen its portfolio, the property will likely attract both leisure travellers and corporate groups seeking unique venues in the Himalayas.
