Journey Beyond, a prominent Australian tourism operator, has significantly expanded its portfolio through the acquisition of Kelsian Group's tourism assets. The deal brings 14 established brands into the Journey Beyond fold, spanning cruises, accommodation, and marine operations, and marks a strategic move to consolidate its position in the country's experiential travel sector.
Alongside the acquisition, Journey Beyond has launched Island Connections, a national brand that consolidates marine transport services across key destinations including the Whitsundays, K’gari (formerly Fraser Island), Bruny Island, and the Tiwi Islands. This new brand aims to enhance connectivity for both travellers and local communities, linking remote areas from Tasmania to the Top End with seamless ferry and cruise services.
The acquisition substantially boosts Journey Beyond's marine capabilities, expanding its fleet to more than 150 vessels and increasing its annual guest count to approximately 2.6 million. This scale positions the company as a leading provider of maritime tourism experiences in Australia.
Portfolio expansion across key regions
In Sydney, the portfolio now includes Captain Cook Cruises Sydney, The Jackson, and Starship Sydney, all offering premium harbour cruises that cater to both leisure and corporate clients. These additions strengthen Journey Beyond's presence in one of Australia's most visited cities.
South Australia sees the inclusion of Murray Princess, a paddlewheeler offering Murray River cruises, and Adelaide Sightseeing, which provides day tours and charter services. Western Australia gains Captain Cook Cruises Perth, Swan Valley Tours, and Bells Functions, expanding the company's reach in the west.
Queensland is a major focus, with the acquisition reinforcing Journey Beyond's operations on K’gari. The portfolio now includes Kingfisher Bay Resort, K’gari Beach Resort, and K’gari Explorer Tours, alongside Red Cat Adventures and Whitsunday Jetski Tours in the Whitsundays. These additions create a comprehensive offering for visitors to the region.
Journey Beyond CEO Chris Tallent commented: “This is an important moment for Journey Beyond, and we're proud to welcome these highly regarded businesses, their people and their guests into the Journey Beyond group.” He highlighted the complementary nature of the new businesses, which will give guests more ways to explore Australia.
The acquisition aligns with broader trends in the travel industry, where consolidation is enabling operators to offer integrated experiences. For travel agents and tour operators, the expanded portfolio means more options for clients seeking diverse Australian adventures, from harbour cruises to outback island escapes.
Journey Beyond's move also reflects a growing emphasis on marine tourism, a segment that has seen increased demand for unique, nature-based experiences. The company's investment in Island Connections underscores its commitment to connecting travellers with Australia's remote and iconic destinations.
As the travel industry continues to recover and evolve, this acquisition positions Journey Beyond to capitalise on the resurgence of domestic and international travel. The company's expanded footprint is expected to drive further growth in the Australian tourism sector.
