The Khyber Group, a diversified conglomerate based in Jammu & Kashmir, has launched Khyber Aquaculture, described as India's largest Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS)-based facility dedicated to Himalayan trout. Located on the banks of the River Sindh in Akhal, Kangan, the eight-acre site represents an investment exceeding $12 million (₹100 crore). The project aims to reposition the region's trout industry as an export-oriented ecosystem by combining advanced aquaculture technology with local farming communities.

The facility currently has a production capacity of 1,500 metric tonnes, with plans to scale to 7,000 metric tonnes annually within three to five years. Its hatchery can produce up to 20 million fingerlings each year. The initiative is expected to generate more than 3,000 indirect livelihood opportunities across the Kashmir Valley, according to company statements.

Technology and Supply Chain Integration

Khyber Aquaculture uses American and Danish-bred eyed ova, along with precision-controlled systems sourced from Denmark, France, and Germany. These technologies aim to increase fish survival rates by 25–30% and reduce pathogen exposure. The facility meets international quality and export standards, with plans to offer both fresh and frozen stocks starting in Q3 2025.

Umar Tramboo, Chairman and Managing Director of Khyber Aquaculture, said: "Our technologically superior facility is an expansion of cold-water aquaculture in Jammu and Kashmir. Our cluster model is designed to integrate production, hatcheries, processing, and supply chains whilst supporting more than 300 local farmers under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme."

The cluster model involves local farmers in the supply chain, providing them with fingerlings, feed, and technical support. This approach mirrors strategies seen in other agricultural sectors and could serve as a template for similar initiatives in other cold-water regions.

As global demand for premium, traceable, and sustainably farmed seafood rises, Khyber Aquaculture plans to develop strong domestic and export market linkages. The company is leveraging the unique geographical advantages of the Kashmir Valley, including its cold-water resources and relatively unpolluted environment.

This development comes as the travel and hospitality industry increasingly focuses on sourcing local, sustainable ingredients. Hotels and resorts in the region, such as those operated by Travel + Leisure Co. and other groups, may benefit from a reliable supply of high-quality trout for their menus. Similarly, cruise lines and tour operators offering culinary experiences in Kashmir could incorporate this product into their itineraries.

The facility's export ambitions align with broader trends in the Indian food industry, where companies are investing in cold-chain infrastructure and quality certifications to access international markets. Khyber Aquaculture's adherence to global standards positions it to compete with trout producers from Norway, Chile, and Scotland.

For travel professionals, this initiative highlights the growing intersection of agriculture and tourism. Destination marketing organizations and tour operators can use the facility as a point of interest for agritourism, offering visitors a chance to see advanced aquaculture in a scenic Himalayan setting. The project also supports the local economy, which can enhance the appeal of Kashmir as a sustainable travel destination.

Khyber Group's investment underscores the potential for cold-water aquaculture in India, a country traditionally associated with warm-water fish farming. If successful, the model could be replicated in other Himalayan states, creating new supply chains for the hospitality industry.
