The Postcard Hotel, known for its boutique properties across India and Southeast Asia, is set to expand into Nepal with a new luxury retreat in Chitwan. The Postcard on the Rapti River is scheduled to open in November 2026, offering 22 rooms and suites with views over the Rapti River and the surrounding wilderness of Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its Bengal tigers and greater one-horned rhinoceroses.
The property is designed to immerse guests in the natural landscape. Each room will feature a private sit-out overlooking the river or forest, while the two-bedroom Presidential Suite will include its own private pool. The architecture and interiors aim to blend with the environment, using local materials and traditional craftsmanship.
Dining and experiences rooted in local culture
Dining at the retreat will highlight regional culinary traditions. The Tree Tops restaurant will offer elevated views of the forest canopy, while Tribal Circle will provide open-air barbecue experiences, allowing guests to sample local flavors in a natural setting. The hotel will also organize guided safaris, forest walks, and cultural visits to Tharu villages, giving travelers a deeper understanding of the area's heritage and wildlife.
Accessibility is a key consideration. The retreat will be reachable via Bharatpur Airport, a short flight from Kathmandu, followed by a 40-minute drive. This connectivity is expected to make Chitwan an easier addition to Nepal itineraries for international travelers.
“Our ambition is to bring these places to life through hotels that are deeply rooted in their surroundings,” said Kapil Chopra, CEO of The Postcard Hotel.
Savanna Vaidya Basnyat, owner of the new retreat, emphasized the project's broader mission: “This project is about more than hospitality. It is about conservation tourism and finding a way for tourism and nature to coexist in harmony.”
The opening follows a successful year for The Postcard Hotel, which received 12 honors at the World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony. The new property will expand the brand's collection of wildlife destinations, with further expansion planned. This move aligns with a broader trend in luxury travel, where travelers increasingly prioritize experiences over amenities, as noted in recent Agoda data on Asia's luxury travelers.
Chitwan National Park is a cornerstone of Nepal's tourism offering, drawing nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers from around the globe. The addition of a high-end property like The Postcard on the Rapti River is likely to boost the region's appeal to luxury travelers, complementing existing lodges and safari operators. The hotel's focus on conservation tourism could also set a precedent for sustainable development in the area.
For travel professionals, the new retreat represents an opportunity to offer clients a unique blend of wildlife adventure and upscale comfort. With its strategic location and emphasis on local culture, The Postcard on the Rapti River is poised to become a sought-after destination for those seeking an immersive yet refined experience in Nepal.
