Qatar Airways has reached a new milestone in in-flight connectivity, becoming the first carrier to operate a Boeing 787-9 equipped with Starlink. The Doha-based airline has now fitted 150 widebody aircraft with the satellite internet service, offering passengers speeds of up to 500 Mbps at cruising altitude.
The rollout, which began in October 2024, has already connected more than 23 million passengers across 86,000 flights. With the programme now 83% complete, Qatar Airways expects to finish equipping its entire Boeing 787 fleet by the end of 2026. This follows the rapid installation of Starlink on its Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 fleets, which took nine and eight months respectively.
Complimentary connectivity for Privilege Club members
Passengers on Starlink-equipped aircraft can enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi through the airline's Privilege Club loyalty programme. The service is available on long-haul and ultra-long-haul routes spanning six continents, allowing travellers to work, stream, or stay in touch with family and colleagues during their journey.
Qatar Airways' commitment to seamless connectivity is part of a broader strategy to enhance the passenger experience and differentiate its product in a competitive market. The airline operates up to 323 Starlink flights daily, making it the world's first and largest operator of Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft.
The move aligns with the carrier's focus on innovation and premium service, which has also seen it expand its F1 stopover packages and position itself as a leading MICE hub for Indian corporate events. As the aviation industry continues to prioritise connectivity, Qatar Airways is setting a benchmark for other carriers to follow.
Industry analysts note that high-speed Wi-Fi has become a key differentiator for airlines, particularly on long-haul routes where passengers expect to remain productive or entertained. Qatar Airways' investment in Starlink technology is a clear response to this demand, and its early adoption gives it a competitive edge.
The airline's progress with Starlink also reflects broader trends in the sector, where carriers are increasingly turning to satellite-based solutions to overcome the limitations of traditional air-to-ground systems. With the global fleet expected to grow significantly by 2045, the demand for reliable in-flight connectivity is likely to intensify.
Qatar Airways' achievement with the Boeing 787-9 is a testament to its operational efficiency and commitment to passenger satisfaction. As the airline continues to expand its Starlink-equipped fleet, it is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in the premium travel segment.
