Singapore's outbound travel market is poised for a significant expansion in 2027, according to Skyscanner's latest Travel Trends report. The research, which surveyed Singaporean travellers, found that 89% intend to maintain or increase their travel frequency, signalling robust demand despite global economic headwinds.

The report, released ahead of the new year, identifies seven key behavioural shifts that are reshaping how Singaporeans plan and experience trips. Among the most striking is the rise of 'Signal Severance' – a trend where 80% of travellers actively seek to disconnect from digital devices during their holidays. This is driving demand for remote and off-grid destinations, with Yining in China and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania seeing notable search growth.

Value and authenticity drive destination choices

Beyond digital detoxes, Singaporeans are increasingly savvy about maximising value. The report highlights 'Pilgra-merch', a trend where 56% of travellers plan trips around acquiring exclusive items that are not available online. This is pushing lesser-known shopping hubs into the spotlight.

Belitung, an Indonesian island, has emerged as the fastest-rising destination, with a 388% year-on-year surge in searches. Meanwhile, Chicago in the United States leads as the best-value destination, thanks to a 47% drop in airfares. These shifts indicate a move away from traditional tourist hubs towards more distinctive, cost-effective experiences.

Bryan Batista, CEO of Skyscanner, commented: “Travel is entering a new era. As people become more intentional about how they spend their time and money, they're making different choices about where they go, how they book and what creates lasting value.”

AI and currency trends shape planning

Technology is playing an increasingly central role in travel planning. The report reveals that 65% of Singaporeans are using AI tools for destination research and itinerary building. Brendan Walsh, Skyscanner's Travel Trends and Destination Expert, advises travellers to leverage AI and favourable currency movements to stretch their budgets further in 2027.

For travel industry stakeholders, these insights offer a clear roadmap. The demand for off-grid experiences presents opportunities for tour operators and hotels to develop packages that emphasise seclusion and digital-free amenities. Similarly, the growing use of AI suggests that travel-tech vendors should focus on enhancing planning tools with predictive and personalisation features.

Singapore's position as a key outbound market is further underscored by recent developments in the region. For instance, Singapore travellers show strong pull toward European cruises, indicating a sustained appetite for long-haul maritime itineraries. Additionally, Singapore leads Southeast Asia in China travel searches, according to Traveloka data, which aligns with the growing interest in destinations like Yining.

On the hospitality front, new properties such as DoubleTree by Hilton's debut at Robertson Quay are catering to the evolving preferences of both leisure and business travellers. Meanwhile, the city-state's MICE sector is adapting to wellness-led demands, as seen with Four Seasons Singapore's focus on multi-generational families and wellness.

As travel demand remains robust, Singaporeans are prioritising authentic experiences, convenience, and cost-effectiveness. The 2027 outlook suggests that those who can deliver on these fronts – whether through unique destinations, smart technology, or value-driven packages – will be well-positioned to capture a share of this booming market.
