Skyscanner is widening its footprint in the European package holiday market, rolling out its comparison tool to France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain. The move builds on the platform's earlier launches in the UK and Germany, and signals the Edinburgh-based metasearch firm's ambition to challenge established tour operators with transparent, data-driven pricing.

The expanded product now connects travellers in these four markets with package deals from a broader roster of suppliers. Joining the existing lineup of TUI, Jet2, and Expedia are British Airways Holidays, Sembo, and AirNGo. These providers gain access to Skyscanner's audience of more than 160 million monthly users, a significant channel for reaching high-intent holiday shoppers.

According to the company, demand for package holidays has surged 19% during peak booking windows, underscoring the appetite for bundled travel options. Skyscanner's technology aggregates pricing and availability across multiple providers, allowing travellers to compare like-for-like packages and make more informed choices.

Disrupting the traditional package holiday market

Catriona King, Global VP of Commercial at Skyscanner, framed the expansion as a direct challenge to the status quo. "Finding the best travel deal shouldn't feel like another chore, so we want to offer travellers the very best options for their holiday. Since launching, our package comparison product has been incredibly popular with holidaymakers," she said.

King emphasised that the company aims to "shake up the traditional travel sector" by simplifying the comparison process and reducing the stress of planning. The tool leverages Skyscanner's extensive pricing data to bring greater transparency to a segment historically dominated by opaque pricing and limited choice.

The expansion comes at a time when package holidays are regaining popularity, particularly among travellers seeking value and convenience. With 91 million package holidays searched daily on Skyscanner, the platform offers suppliers a direct route to a massive, engaged audience actively looking for deals.

For travel providers, the move represents an opportunity to diversify distribution channels and capture demand from price-sensitive consumers. The addition of British Airways Holidays, a major airline-owned tour operator, is particularly notable, as it bridges the gap between flight-centric metasearch and traditional package retailing.

Skyscanner's strategy mirrors broader industry trends, where technology platforms are encroaching on territory once held by high-street travel agents and legacy tour operators. The company's ability to aggregate real-time pricing and inventory across multiple suppliers gives it a competitive edge in a market that is increasingly digital-first.

The company plans to enter additional markets by 2027, though it has not specified which countries are next. Given the success in the UK and Germany, and the current expansion into Southern and Western Europe, further growth in the region seems likely.

For travel professionals, the development is a reminder of the growing importance of metasearch and price transparency in the package holiday sector. As Skyscanner continues to scale, traditional players may need to adapt their distribution strategies to remain competitive.
