Star Air, the regional carrier backed by the Sanjay Ghodawat Group, has confirmed it will begin nonstop service between Ahmedabad and Mundra on 17 August 2026. The thrice-weekly operation, scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, is designed to tighten the link between Gujarat's primary business centre and the site of India's largest private port.
The route responds to a long-standing gap in the state's domestic air network. Until now, executives and logistics professionals moving between Ahmedabad and Mundra faced a road journey of roughly six hours or had to piece together connecting flights via other hubs. Star Air's new schedule offers an early-morning departure from Ahmedabad and an evening return from Mundra, allowing a full working day at either end.
Strategic connectivity for trade and industry
Mundra has evolved from a quiet coastal town into a critical node in India's international cargo chain, handling a significant share of the nation's container traffic. The port's industrial hinterland includes refineries, power plants and manufacturing zones, all of which depend on efficient movement of personnel and time-sensitive materials. Ahmedabad, meanwhile, remains a magnet for finance, textiles, pharmaceuticals and education, making the city pair a natural fit for scheduled air service.
Shilpa Bhatia, chief commercial and marketing officer at Star Air, framed the launch as more than a convenience play. “The direct Ahmedabad–Mundra service is more than just a flight; it’s a strategic link between two of India’s most dynamic economic engines,” she said. “By making travel faster and more convenient, we’re supporting the ambitions of businesses, entrepreneurs, and communities across the country.”
The airline will deploy its regional jet fleet on the sector, with tickets already on sale through Star Air's own digital channels and major online travel agencies. Fares are expected to undercut the combined cost of road transport and overnight stays that many business travellers currently absorb.
Wider implications for Gujarat's aviation map
The move adds to a growing roster of intra-state connections that Indian carriers have introduced as part of the government's regional connectivity push. Star Air's decision to target a port city rather than a traditional tourist destination underscores a broader trend: airlines are increasingly tailoring networks to logistics and industrial demand, not just passenger leisure flows.
Industry observers note that the Ahmedabad–Mundra route could also support the MICE segment, as companies with operations around the port seek to host meetings and site visits without the friction of long transfers. The early-morning and evening timings are particularly suited to day-trip itineraries.
For travel agents and corporate booking platforms, the new service simplifies itinerary planning for clients with interests in Gujarat's maritime economy. It also complements recent developments in India's aviation sector, such as Akasa Air's new loyalty programme, which reflects the industry's focus on retaining frequent business travellers.
Star Air's expansion comes at a time when Indian carriers are reassessing secondary routes. The airline already operates a mix of metro and tier-2 city connections, and the Mundra addition is expected to be one of several new links announced over the coming months. Whether other carriers follow suit will depend on load factors and cargo potential, but the initial response from the business community in Kutch has been positive.
