TravelAI, the Canadian company behind the Travel Memory infrastructure, has acquired the Sonder brand — including its global trademarks and domain portfolio — but not its operational assets. The acquisition, completed through a court-supervised bankruptcy process in Canada and approved by the Superior Court of Québec, was announced on 27 July 2026. Sonder.com has been relaunched as a curated guide for boutique hotels and urban accommodations, powered by TravelAI's memory infrastructure.

Sonder was founded in Montreal in 2014 and became known for design-led urban stays, offering high-end flat-style accommodations. However, after its partnership with Marriott International ended in November 2025, Sonder's parent company began winding down. TravelAI's purchase excludes Sonder's properties, leases, and staff, focusing solely on the brand and intellectual property.

What the new Sonder.com offers

The new Sonder.com will not operate hotels. Instead, it will provide a curated selection of accommodations based on design, neighbourhood, and quality, covering major urban centres such as New York, London, and Dubai. TravelAI CEO John Lyotier said, "We acquired the one brand in travel whose name already means what we are building with our memory infrastructure."

TravelAI continues to expand its portfolio, having previously acquired brands like Casai and Smartours. The company is also developing AI infrastructure to enhance personalisation in travel experiences, with Sonder.com set to evolve alongside these technological advancements. For context, TravelAI recently launched Traveller.md, a portable user-owned memory file for personalised travel planning.

The acquisition marks a homecoming for the brand, which originated in Canada. TravelAI sees this as a strategic move to leverage Sonder's name recognition and digital assets without the burden of physical operations. The company plans to integrate Sonder.com with its memory infrastructure to offer a more personalised booking experience for travellers seeking boutique and design-led stays.

Industry observers note that this model — acquiring a brand without operational assets — is becoming more common as travel-tech companies seek to build digital ecosystems. Similar moves include Holidu's acquisition of Gites.com to scale AI-driven integration across European vacation rentals. TravelAI's approach focuses on curating rather than owning inventory, which could appeal to hoteliers and boutique property owners looking for a distribution channel that emphasises design and neighbourhood character.

For travel professionals, the relaunch of Sonder.com represents a new distribution option for boutique hotels and urban accommodations. The platform's reliance on TravelAI's memory infrastructure could offer enhanced personalisation, potentially driving higher conversion rates for partner properties. However, the success of this model will depend on TravelAI's ability to attract a critical mass of curated listings and deliver a seamless user experience.

TravelAI's broader strategy includes building AI tools that remember traveller preferences across bookings, a concept that aligns with the growing demand for personalised travel. The company's acquisition of Sonder's brand and domain gives it a ready-made platform to test these capabilities in the urban accommodation segment.
