Thailand's domestic travel landscape is shifting, with Khao Yai and Koh Chang emerging as the country's fastest-rising destinations, according to Traveloka's Q3 2026 SEA Index. The data, drawn from Traveloka's platform across Southeast Asia, reveals a 40% year-on-year surge in searches for Koh Chang, while Khao Yai leads the list of domestic destinations gaining momentum.

The index highlights a growing appetite among Thai travellers for national park escapes, coastal retreats, and cultural immersion. Thipaporn Daungmak, Country Manager for Thailand and Singapore at Traveloka, said: “Thailand’s appeal lies in the diversity of experiences within each destination, from its natural landscapes and coastlines to the heritage and communities that give a place its character.”

Khao Yai and coastal favourites lead the rise

Khao Yai, renowned for its national park and vineyards, tops the domestic fastest-riser list, followed by coastal favourites Pattaya and Si Racha, and cultural hubs Nakhon Ratchasima and Sakon Nakhon. These destinations offer a mix of nature, beach, and heritage experiences, catering to a broad range of traveller preferences.

The index's “Next Destination” section shows a notable increase in searches for Koh Chang, signalling rising interest in island getaways. Meanwhile, accommodation searches for Nakhon Phanom have climbed by around 50%, driven by its Mekong River setting and sacred landmarks such as Phra That Phanom.

This trend aligns with broader shifts in Thai domestic travel, where travellers are seeking less-crowded, more authentic experiences. For hoteliers and tour operators, the data suggests opportunities to develop packages that combine nature, culture, and coastal elements.

Traveloka's findings also reflect a wider Southeast Asian pattern of travellers booking further ahead, as seen in recent Traveloka data on Singapore travellers. This forward-planning behaviour is likely to influence how destinations and suppliers manage inventory and marketing.

For the hospitality sector, the rise of secondary destinations like Khao Yai and Koh Chang underscores the value of investing in properties beyond Bangkok and Phuket. Recent award wins, such as Ramada Resort by Wyndham Khao Lak's renovation recognition, highlight the industry's focus on upgrading regional offerings.

Traveloka's index also points to the growing importance of digital platforms in shaping travel decisions. As travellers increasingly search for specific experiences, destinations and businesses that leverage data insights will be better positioned to capture demand.

For travel agents and DMCs, the shift towards emerging Thai destinations presents new itinerary possibilities. The award-winning DMC platform from Vio Travel demonstrates how technology can support sustainable tourism in these areas.

Overall, the Q3 2026 SEA Index underscores a move towards exploring Thailand's diverse landscapes and cultural heritage. For industry stakeholders, the message is clear: travellers are ready to discover the country's rich offerings beyond the traditional hotspots.
