Tune Protect Group Berhad is widening its embedded travel insurance distribution through a deepened partnership with the online travel agency Airpaz, extending coverage to Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. The move follows a successful rollout in Malaysia last year and underscores the Kuala Lumpur-based insurer's push to embed protection directly into the flight-booking journey across Southeast Asia's fast-growing digital travel ecosystem.
The integration means travellers using Airpaz can now add a policy at the point of sale, with coverage details and claims support delivered digitally and policies issued instantly. For a region where mobile-first booking behaviour is the norm, the frictionless add-on is designed to capture demand from travellers who might otherwise skip insurance altogether.
Strategic expansion in high-growth markets
Janet Chin, CEO of Tune Protect Re, framed the expansion as a response to shifting consumer expectations. "We are making it easier for travellers to access protection when planning their trips, helping them travel with greater confidence and peace of mind," she said. The company sees embedded insurance as a key lever to grow its footprint in Asia's digital travel value chain, particularly in markets with strong smartphone penetration and a rising middle class.
The offering is underpinned by regional underwriting partners: Oona Insurance in Indonesia, Krungthai Panich Insurance in Thailand, and Pioneer Insurance & Surety Corporation in the Philippines. These local carriers ensure that policies are tailored to each market's regulatory and customer needs, while Tune Protect provides the product design and digital infrastructure.
Wesley, Chief Partnership Officer at Airpaz, highlighted the convenience factor. "This partnership gives our customers a more seamless way to access travel protection directly on the Airpaz platform," he said. The instant issuance model removes the need for separate paperwork or post-booking purchases, a common pain point in the industry.
Embedded insurance gains traction in travel
The move reflects a broader trend across the travel sector, where insurers and distributors are embedding coverage into booking flows rather than relying on standalone sales. For airlines and OTAs, such partnerships generate ancillary revenue while improving the customer experience. For insurers, they offer a low-cost distribution channel into high-intent audiences.
Tune Protect's expansion comes as Southeast Asia's travel rebound continues, with intra-regional traffic and outbound demand both climbing. The company's strategy aligns with the region's digital adoption, which has accelerated since the pandemic. By integrating with Airpaz, which operates across multiple markets, Tune Protect can scale its reach without building its own distribution network.
The partnership also complements other industry developments in the region. For instance, Indonesia's tourism zoning policies are evolving to address climate risks, which could influence travel patterns and insurance needs. Similarly, Indonesia's niche tourism push targeting South Korean travellers highlights the importance of tailored travel products in the region.
For travel agents and tour operators, the Airpaz-Tune Protect tie-up signals the growing importance of embedded insurance as a revenue stream and customer loyalty tool. As more OTAs and airlines adopt similar models, agents may need to adapt their own offerings to remain competitive.
The expansion strengthens Tune Protect's presence in Southeast Asia and aligns with its growth strategy to deliver integrated travel solutions across the region. With the travel industry's continued recovery, such partnerships are likely to become more common, reshaping how insurance is sold and consumed in the travel ecosystem.
