Uber has entered a strategic partnership with ixigo, India's AI-native travel platform, to integrate train ticket booking directly into the Uber app. The new feature allows users to book train tickets, check PNR status, and arrange first- and last-mile connectivity to and from railway stations—all within a single interface. This marks a significant step in Uber's expansion of intercity travel options in one of the world's largest rail markets.

Train travel is a cornerstone of long-distance mobility in India, with Indian Railways carrying 741 crore passengers in fiscal year 2025–26. By leveraging ixigo's advanced train booking technology, Uber aims to simplify the entire rail journey, from doorstep to destination. The integration is designed to offer a seamless, connected travel experience that addresses the fragmented nature of current booking and ground transport processes.

One app for the full journey

Arnab Kumar, Director of Business Development for Uber India and South Asia, emphasized the importance of trains in India's travel ecosystem: "Train journeys are an integral part of how India travels. With Train Ticket Booking on the Uber app, riders can now book their train tickets, check their PNR status, and seamlessly connect to and from the railway station, all within a single app."

Aloke Bajpai, Group CEO, and Rajnish Kumar, Group Co-CEO of ixigo, added: "By partnering with Uber, we're extending that experience beyond the train itself, enabling travellers to plan their journey seamlessly from their doorstep to their destination." The collaboration underscores ixigo's ambition to embed its rail booking capabilities into broader mobility ecosystems, a trend that is gaining traction across the travel technology sector.

Uber's presence at Indian railway stations is already substantial, with dedicated pickup and drop-off zones in cities such as Ahmedabad, Secunderabad, and Howrah. The addition of train booking strengthens Uber's multimodal platform, which already includes Moto, Auto, Cars, Metro, Intercity Cars, and Buses. This move positions Uber as a one-stop shop for urban and intercity travel, a strategy that aligns with broader industry shifts toward integrated mobility solutions.

For travel professionals, this partnership highlights the growing importance of multimodal connectivity in the Indian market. As rail remains the backbone of long-distance travel, integrating booking and ground transport into a single app could set a precedent for other mobility providers. The collaboration also reflects a broader trend of travel platforms expanding beyond their core offerings—similar to how AI-driven booking tools are reshaping the agent landscape.

From a technology perspective, the integration leverages ixigo's robust rail booking engine, which handles millions of transactions daily. This partnership could also pave the way for future innovations, such as predictive travel suggestions or dynamic pricing for last-mile rides based on train schedules. For airlines and hoteliers, the move signals a shift toward more holistic travel planning, where ground transport is seamlessly linked to other modes.

Uber's expansion into train bookings is part of a larger strategy to dominate the intercity travel segment in India. The company has been investing heavily in its multimodal offerings, and this partnership with ixigo is a key pillar of that strategy. As the travel industry increasingly focuses on seamless end-to-end experiences, such collaborations are likely to become more common.

For travel agents and tour operators, the integration offers an opportunity to enhance their own offerings by leveraging Uber's platform for client ground transport. The ability to book trains and connect to stations within one app could streamline operations for corporate travel managers as well. The partnership also underscores the importance of technology in improving the traveler experience, a theme echoed in recent developments like Air New Zealand's rebooking tech.

In the broader context of India's travel market, this move could accelerate the adoption of digital booking platforms. With rail travel volumes expected to grow, the convenience of integrated booking is likely to attract a wide range of users, from daily commuters to long-distance travelers. For the travel industry, the Uber-ixigo partnership is a clear signal that multimodal integration is no longer a nice-to-have but a competitive necessity.
