Vietnam Airlines has formalised strategic partnerships with Visa and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate its digital transformation and embed artificial intelligence across its operations. The memorandums of understanding were signed during a US visit by Vietnam's General Secretary and President To Lam, underscoring the carrier's ambition to evolve from a traditional flag carrier into a data-driven digital airline.
Lotusmiles: from frequent-flyer points to a lifestyle ecosystem
The agreement with Visa centres on overhauling the Lotusmiles programme, shifting it from a conventional frequent-flyer scheme into a comprehensive loyalty platform. The two companies will develop co-branded cards for both domestic and international markets, with benefits extending beyond air miles to include priority check-in, dining, and shopping privileges.
Dang Tuyet Dung, Visa's Country Manager for Vietnam and Laos, said: “Visa looks forward to working with Vietnam Airlines to explore payment and service solutions that respond to the increasingly diverse needs of today's customers.” The move aligns with broader industry trends where airlines are leveraging loyalty assets to build lucrative partnerships that extend beyond the cabin.
AWS to power AI-driven operations
On the technology front, the MoU with AWS will accelerate Vietnam Airlines' transition to a digital airline, with a focus on AI applications in passenger services and aircraft maintenance. The carrier plans to use AWS's machine learning and analytics capabilities to personalise the travel experience and improve operational efficiency.
Tedd Evers, Global Partner Leader for Travel and Hospitality at AWS, commented: “Our collaboration with Vietnam Airlines aims to accelerate digital transformation, personalise the passenger experience, and enhance service excellence.”
The airline's maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) division is expected to benefit from predictive maintenance models, reducing downtime and improving fleet reliability. On the passenger side, AI-driven chatbots and dynamic pricing are likely to be early use cases.
Building a connected travel ecosystem
These partnerships are part of a broader strategy to integrate aviation with financial services, tourism, and data. Vietnam Airlines aims to create a seamless ecosystem that connects flights, hotels, ground transport, and ancillary services, meeting rising passenger expectations for integrated travel experiences.
The move also reflects a wider industry push towards digital loyalty and data monetisation. As carriers like Turkish Airlines expand their fleets and freighter operators renew cargo agreements, Vietnam Airlines is positioning itself as a tech-forward player in Southeast Asia's competitive aviation market.
Vietnam's outbound and inbound travel markets have shown strong recovery, with search data indicating robust demand. The airline's digital push is timely, as travellers increasingly expect frictionless, personalised journeys.
Industry observers will watch how Vietnam Airlines executes on these MoUs, particularly in rolling out co-branded cards and AI-driven services. The partnerships signal a clear intent to move beyond traditional airline operations and embrace a more agile, customer-centric model.
