Air Astana has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability strategy, becoming the first carrier in Central Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to secure the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Sustainable Procurement certification. The recognition, granted under IATA's Integrated Sustainability Programme (ISP), places the Kazakh flag carrier among just three airlines worldwide to hold this credential.

The IATA ISP provides a structured framework for airlines to embed environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across their operations. Air Astana's certification reflects a rigorous approach to responsible sourcing, encompassing ESG criteria in procurement decisions, supplier evaluations, and governance protocols. The airline's Sustainability & ESG Procurement Policy Statement and Supplier Code of Conduct form the backbone of these efforts, establishing clear expectations for sustainable supplier engagement.

"Receiving the IATA ISP Sustainable Procurement certification marks an important milestone in Air Astana's sustainability journey," said Ibrahim Canliel, CEO of Air Astana. "We are proud to set a benchmark for sustainable procurement in Kazakhstan and the region."

The certification underscores Air Astana's broader commitment to responsible business practices, which extends beyond its own operations to its supply chain. By integrating ESG principles into procurement and fostering collaboration with suppliers, the airline aims to drive positive change across the aviation industry in Central Asia.

Supplier recognition and industry impact

To encourage continuous improvement among its partners, Air Astana launched the annual ESG Awards in 2024. The awards honour suppliers that demonstrate strong ESG performance, promoting the exchange of best practices and incentivising further progress. This initiative complements the airline's certification and reinforces its role as a regional leader in sustainable aviation.

The achievement comes as Air Astana continues to expand its international footprint. The carrier recently reported an 18.3% rise in second-quarter revenue, driven by growth on routes to destinations such as Dubai, where it has extended its suspension through September 2026. Despite such operational adjustments, the airline remains focused on long-term sustainability goals.

Air Astana's certification also aligns with broader industry trends, as travel companies increasingly prioritise ESG credentials. Similar moves are visible across the sector, from Sands China's global ISO 14001:2026 environmental certification to Atlantis Dubai's trio of sustainability certifications. These developments signal a growing emphasis on verifiable sustainability performance in travel and hospitality.

For travel professionals, Air Astana's certification offers a model for integrating ESG into procurement functions. The airline's approach—combining policy frameworks, supplier codes, and recognition programmes—provides a practical blueprint for carriers and other travel businesses seeking to enhance their sustainability credentials.

As the aviation industry faces mounting pressure to reduce its environmental impact, certifications like IATA's ISP are becoming key differentiators. Air Astana's early adoption positions it favourably among corporate clients and partners who prioritise sustainable supply chains.

With this certification, Air Astana not only strengthens its own ESG profile but also raises the bar for the region's aviation sector. The airline's leadership in sustainable procurement is expected to influence peers and suppliers alike, fostering a more responsible aviation ecosystem across Central Asia and beyond.
