The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is reshaping global border management through a coordinated trusted travel framework. The initiative, detailed in new research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), marks a significant leap in travel facilitation for the largest tournament in FIFA history, featuring 48 teams.

Digital Border Innovations Drive Efficiency

To manage the complex logistics of mass international arrivals, host nations have deployed digital border systems that pre-clear low-risk travellers. In the United States, over 5.9 million Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) applications were processed, with more than 5 million approved. Additionally, 1.6 million travellers enrolled in Trusted Traveller Programmes (TTP) such as Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI, enabling expedited entry at airports and land borders.

Mexico has opened its doors to citizens from more than 65 countries, allowing visa-free stays of up to 180 days. Canada, meanwhile, has streamlined entry through its NEXUS programme and the ArriveCAN app, reducing wait times for pre-approved travellers. These measures, supported by platforms like FIFA PASS and COMPASS, have improved the fan experience while helping border authorities manage demand surges.

“The FIFA World Cup has consistently demonstrated that border management can evolve from a barrier into an enabler of global connectivity,” said Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of the WTTC.

The trusted travel model builds on lessons from previous mega-events, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which introduced biometric entry for ticket holders. For 2026, the tri-nation approach requires interoperability across different national systems, a challenge the WTTC says will be critical for future tournaments like the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will span multiple continents.

For travel industry professionals, the implications extend beyond the tournament. Airlines such as American Airlines and Alaska Airlines have already adjusted operations, with the latter debuting a World Cup-themed livery on its Boeing 737-9 MAX aircraft. Hoteliers in host cities are seeing shifts in booking patterns, as some properties cut rates while alternative lodging gains traction. Meanwhile, Colliers projects measured US hotel growth through 2026, fueled by the World Cup and AI-driven demand forecasting.

The WTTC emphasises that interoperable solutions are essential as mega-events become more geographically distributed. The 2030 World Cup, for instance, will involve six nations across three continents, requiring seamless data sharing between border agencies. Guevara noted that the 2026 model could serve as a template for future events, including the Olympics and major MICE gatherings.

For travel agents and tour operators, the streamlined border processes reduce friction for clients, particularly those booking multi-destination itineraries across North America. The use of apps like ArriveCAN and platforms like FIFA PASS also offers a glimpse into how technology can enhance the end-to-end travel experience, from booking to arrival.

As the tournament approaches, stakeholders across aviation, hospitality, and tourism will watch closely how these border innovations hold up under real-world pressure. If successful, the 2026 World Cup could permanently alter how nations manage international travel for large-scale events.
