Grab has introduced a series of enhancements to its Cross-Border SG-JB (Beta) service, the ride-hailing pilot connecting Singapore with destinations in Malaysia. Since its launch on 4 May 2026, the service has logged more than 1,000 trips, and the latest updates aim to streamline the cross-border travel experience for passengers and taxi driver-partners alike.
Key Operational Improvements
The most notable change is the reduction of the advance booking window from 12 hours to just six hours, giving passengers greater flexibility when planning trips between Singapore and locations in Johor and beyond. Additionally, Grab has introduced automated notifications to simplify return bookings, allowing users to secure a ride back without manual re-entry of trip details.
Alvin Wee, Senior Director of Transport and Country Operations at Grab Singapore, acknowledged the complexities inherent in cross-border travel. “Cross-border travel comes with unique complexities, and their feedback has been invaluable in shaping these initial updates to our pilot service,” he said, thanking passengers and licensed taxi driver-partners for their input.
Grab is the first platform to receive the Cross-Border Ride-Hail Service Operator Licence under the enhanced Cross-Border Taxi Scheme, a regulatory framework that permits ride-hailing across the Singapore-Malaysia border. The company continues to work closely with regulators to refine operations and ensure reliability.
Discounts to Drive Demand During School Holidays
To encourage uptake, Grab is offering a discount of up to 30% on cross-border rides from 29 May to 28 June 2026, an increase from the initial 20% discount offered earlier in May. This promotion is timed to coincide with school holidays, targeting families and friends looking to travel between the two countries. The move aligns with broader trends in Southeast Asian travel, where short-haul cross-border trips are gaining momentum as Hyatt's Asia-Pacific promotion and other regional offers seek to capture leisure demand.
The SG-JB corridor is one of the busiest land border crossings in the world, with millions of trips made annually by bus, car, and train. Grab’s pilot service offers a door-to-door alternative, leveraging its network of licensed taxi driver-partners to provide a seamless experience. The company has emphasized that the service is still in beta, and further refinements are expected based on user feedback.
