Hong Kong Airlines has confirmed it will relaunch its exclusive nonstop service between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Saipan International Airport (SPN) on July 12, 2026. The route, which is the only direct connection between China and Saipan, positions the carrier as the sole provider of nonstop access to the Northern Mariana Islands for Chinese travelers.

The airline will operate the route twice weekly using Airbus A320 family aircraft. Outbound flight HX72 departs Hong Kong at 18:30, arriving in Saipan at 01:30 the following day. The return leg, HX73, leaves Saipan at 03:00 and lands back in Hong Kong at 06:20. This schedule supports five-day, three-night or six-day, four-night itineraries, appealing to leisure travelers and tour operators packaging island getaways.

Seasonal Resumption and Market Context

The service will run on a seasonal basis, consistent with the carrier’s previous summer schedules. Hong Kong Airlines first launched the Hong Kong–Saipan route on July 6, 2016, using Airbus A330 widebody aircraft, and was the only Hong Kong-based carrier on the sector. After suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline resumed the route on April 28, 2024, with its chairman personally operating the inaugural flight carrying 292 passengers and crew. The route was also operated seasonally between October 2025 and March 2026.

For travel professionals, the relaunch offers a unique opportunity to market Saipan as a visa-free destination for Chinese passport holders, though agents should note that travelers with prior U.S. visa refusals may face additional scrutiny or denial of entry. This nuance is critical for tour operators and travel advisors when advising clients.

The resumption comes amid broader shifts in Asia-Pacific travel demand. As noted in a recent analysis, Palmqvist: APAC Hotels Outperform Globally with Record Rate Growth Amid Cooling Demand, the region continues to see strong hotel performance, which could benefit Saipan’s hospitality sector as airlift increases.

For airlines and travel-tech vendors, the route’s exclusivity underscores the importance of niche connectivity in a competitive market. Meanwhile, agents can leverage this direct link to differentiate their offerings, especially as safety and reliability remain top priorities for travelers, as highlighted in the Global Rescue Survey: Travelers Prioritize Safety Over Rising Airline Costs.

Hong Kong Airlines’ decision to use the A320—a narrowbody aircraft—rather than the A330 used in earlier years reflects a focus on cost efficiency and capacity alignment with demand. The twice-weekly frequency is modest but sufficient to serve the leisure market without overcapacity.

Industry observers will watch whether other carriers follow suit, but for now, Hong Kong Airlines holds a unique position as the only nonstop link between China and Saipan, a destination that combines U.S. territory status with tropical appeal. The route’s seasonal nature suggests the airline is testing sustained demand before committing to year-round service.
