A new survey from Global Rescue, a leading travel risk management firm, reveals that international travelers are increasingly concerned about the affordability and reliability of air travel, yet destination safety remains their top priority. The survey, conducted between 2 and 14 June 2026 among current and former Global Rescue members, found that 69% of respondents worry about rising airline costs and reduced route networks.
However, more than half of travelers—55%—said they prioritize destination safety over ticket prices or route cuts. Another 27% view both safety and costs as significant concerns, reflecting a more complex risk assessment process. Only 12% said airline costs and route reductions are greater deterrents than safety issues.
Travelers Adapt to Environmental Challenges
Despite record-breaking heatwaves across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, 71% of respondents have not changed their travel plans. Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies, noted: "International travellers are facing a convergence of challenges that extends well beyond traditional safety concerns. The decision-making process for travel has become more complex, with travellers evaluating multiple factors simultaneously."
Richards added that travelers are adapting to environmental challenges rather than canceling trips, suggesting a willingness to manage risks and adjust expectations. This resilience is notable as airlines like United Airlines and Philippine Airlines continue to navigate fluctuating fuel costs and network adjustments. For example, United Airlines Marks US 250th with Patriotic Livery, Military Pilot Milestone highlights how carriers are balancing brand initiatives with operational pressures.
The findings underscore a shift in traveler behavior: while cost sensitivity is rising, safety remains non-negotiable. This has implications for airlines, hoteliers, and tour operators who must communicate safety protocols clearly while managing pricing strategies. For independent hotels, forming global alliances can help tackle distribution costs, as seen in Independent Hotels Forge Global Alliances to Tackle Distribution Costs and Scaling Challenges.
Travel technology vendors also have a role to play. Tools that provide real-time safety updates and cost comparisons can help travelers make informed decisions. The survey suggests that the industry must address both affordability and safety to maintain traveler confidence.
As the travel industry prepares for events like the WTTC Global Summit 2026 to Convene Travel Leaders in Valletta, Malta, these insights will be critical for shaping strategies that meet evolving traveler expectations.
