Hualien County Government has entered a first-time partnership with the globally popular One Piece franchise to launch a summer event aimed at boosting tourism along Taiwan's scenic east coast. The centerpiece is a 15-metre-long replica of the Thousand Sunny ship, now floating on Liyu Lake in Shoufeng Township, offering a striking visual anchor for visitors and a fresh draw for the region's travel trade.
Character installations tied to local landmarks
The event features six new character installations, each strategically placed at a Hualien landmark to encourage exploration beyond the main venue. Usopp greets arrivals at Hualien Railway Station, symbolising the start of a journey. Zoro stands at the century-old General's House, Chiang Chün Fu, blending Japanese-era architecture with cultural heritage. Luffy is stationed at Dongdamen Night Market, a hub for local delicacies, while Sanji appears at Sunrise Square, highlighting Hualien's marine culture. Nami is set at Zhikaxuan Forest Park, offering a natural retreat, and Chopper is at Liyu Lake, the primary venue known for its scenic beauty.
Running until 20 August, the event includes a stamp rally mission that guides participants through these locations, encouraging longer stays and deeper engagement with the county's attractions. Evening entertainment features water and light shows, fireworks, and fire dance performances, adding a nocturnal dimension to the visitor experience.
According to the Hualien County Government, the initiative aims to enhance the tourism experience by combining local culture with the beloved One Piece characters, offering both sightseeing and therapeutic experiences. The collaboration is part of a broader strategy to attract both domestic and international visitors, particularly families and anime fans, to a region known for its natural beauty and cultural depth.
For travel professionals, this event underscores the growing trend of anime-themed tourism as a driver for regional travel. Similar initiatives have proven successful in Japan, where character-based attractions have boosted visitor numbers in rural areas. Hualien's approach leverages a globally recognised intellectual property to create a unique selling point, potentially appealing to tour operators looking to package themed itineraries.
The event also aligns with broader efforts to promote Taiwan's east coast as a destination. With the summer season in full swing, Hualien is positioning itself as a must-visit for both leisure travellers and those seeking cultural immersion. The county's investment in such collaborations reflects a proactive approach to destination marketing, one that could serve as a model for other regions in Asia.
As the travel industry continues to recover, destination-level partnerships with popular franchises offer a way to differentiate offerings and drive footfall. Hualien's One Piece event is a case in point, demonstrating how intellectual property can be woven into the fabric of a destination's tourism strategy. For agents and operators, this presents an opportunity to create tailored packages that capitalise on the event's appeal, potentially extending the summer season and encouraging repeat visits.
The event's integration with local landmarks also highlights the importance of placemaking in tourism development. By associating characters with specific sites, Hualien is not only driving traffic but also encouraging visitors to explore lesser-known areas, thereby distributing economic benefits more evenly across the county.
With the event running through August, there is ample time for travel professionals to incorporate it into their offerings. The combination of a major franchise, scenic venues, and nightly entertainment makes Hualien a compelling option for summer travel, and one that is likely to generate significant interest among both domestic and international audiences.
