ICONSIAM, the sprawling riverfront complex on Bangkok's Chao Phraya River, is stepping up its pitch to international travellers during Golden Week, betting that a blend of Thai heritage, high-end retail, and culinary firepower will keep the Thai capital front-of-mind for Asian holidaymakers.

The property, which has become a magnet for both tourists and locals since opening in 2018, is rolling out its “Discover Thailand at ICONSIAM” campaign through the holiday period. The initiative encourages visitors to share their experiences on social media for a chance to win Thai-inspired souvenirs, part of a broader effort to deepen engagement beyond a standard shopping stop.

“Today's travellers are looking for destinations that offer a deeper connection to the places they visit—experiences that are authentic, memorable and meaningful,” said Suma Wongphan, Executive Vice President and Division Head of Marketing at ICONSIAM Company Limited. Her comments reflect a wider industry shift toward immersive travel, a trend that is reshaping how destinations and attractions market themselves.

A one-stop destination for culture, cuisine, and luxury

ICONSIAM's positioning rests on its ability to package multiple draws under one roof. The complex houses SOOKSIAM, a dedicated zone replicating Thai street food and local crafts, alongside upscale dining outlets such as Nara Thai Cuisine and ThongSmith, both of which have built strong followings among international visitors.

For those seeking high-end retail, ICONLUXE brings together brands like Dior, Gucci, and Hermès, while ICONCRAFT offers a curated selection of Thai artisan products. The property also claims Thailand's first flagship Apple Store and hosts Michelin-starred Blue by Alain Ducasse, giving it a rare combination of mass appeal and exclusivity.

Entertainment is another pillar. The ICONIC Multimedia Water Features Show and the Alangkarn Waterfall provide nightly riverside spectacles, adding a sensory layer to the shopping and dining experience. These elements are designed to extend dwell time, a key metric for any large-scale retail destination.

The Golden Week push comes as Bangkok continues to compete with regional rivals for Asian travellers. The city's hotel sector has been buoyed by strong demand, with properties like Capella Bangkok earning global accolades, and the broader tourism economy is benefiting from increased air connectivity and visa facilitation. ICONSIAM's campaign is a reminder that attractions themselves are now active marketers, not passive beneficiaries of wider tourism growth.

For travel professionals, the initiative underscores the importance of partnerships between destination attractions and the trade. Agents and tour operators can leverage ICONSIAM's diverse offerings to build itineraries that mix culture, shopping, and dining, particularly for clients seeking more than a standard city tour. The complex's riverside location also makes it a natural fit for cruise passengers docking in Bangkok, a segment that has been expanding as river and ocean cruises add Thai ports.

ICONSIAM's strategy aligns with broader trends in Asian tourism, where experiential spending is outpacing traditional retail. According to industry data, travellers in the region are increasingly prioritising unique local experiences over material purchases, a shift that ICONSIAM is clearly banking on. The campaign's social media component also taps into the growing influence of user-generated content in travel decision-making.

While Golden Week is a peak period for Chinese and Japanese outbound travel, ICONSIAM's appeal extends to visitors from across Asia and beyond. The complex's mix of international luxury and authentic Thai elements gives it a broad base, and its marketing efforts are likely to resonate with both first-time and repeat visitors to Bangkok.

As Bangkok's tourism landscape becomes more competitive, with new hotels and attractions opening regularly, established landmarks like ICONSIAM must continually refresh their offerings. The Golden Week campaign is a clear attempt to do just that, leveraging the property's scale and diversity to capture a share of the region's most valuable travel window.
