InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa has formalized a year-long partnership with Children of the Sea, a grassroots program that uses surfing as a vehicle for youth development at Natadola Beach. The collaboration, effective from 13 June 2026, delivers practical support including weekly lunch packs, transport assistance, and First Aid training for program staff.

Founded by Inia Nakalevu and Lea Chin, Children of the Sea launched in September 2024 with just four boys and has since grown to serve 23 children aged 6 to 16 from the local community. The program leverages surfing to build teamwork, communication skills, and a stronger connection to the ocean.

Community and Corporate Alignment

Beyond InterContinental Fiji, the initiative also draws support from Grand Pacific Hotel Suva and Holiday Inn Suva through their 'Cup of Kindness' coffee sales, with proceeds directed to Children of the Sea. This multi-property backing aligns with IHG Hotels & Resorts' 'Journey to Tomorrow' responsible business plan, which prioritizes positive community and environmental impact.

Lachlan Walker, Regional General Manager for Fiji and Pacific at IHG Hotels & Resorts, emphasized the importance of community-led initiatives. "Children of the Sea is helping children build confidence, discipline, and connection through the ocean," he stated. Co-Founder Lea Chin added, "The support from InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa helps with the practical things that make each session possible."

This partnership underscores a broader trend in Fiji's hospitality sector, where hotels are increasingly engaging with local communities. For example, One Beach Fiji Unites Hotels and Communities for National Coastal Clean-Up highlights similar collaborative efforts across the islands.

For travel professionals, this story reflects a growing emphasis on authentic community engagement as a differentiator in the luxury and resort segment. As APAC Generational Travel Shifts as Younger Tourists Ditch Rigid Group Tours, experiences that connect guests with local culture and social impact become increasingly valuable.

InterContinental Fiji's commitment to fostering opportunities for the next generation positions the resort as a leader in responsible tourism, ensuring the ocean is seen as a place of learning and possibility for local youth.
