Chonburi, one of Thailand's most established coastal provinces, is experiencing a notable resurgence in domestic travel demand. According to new data from Traveloka, accommodation searches for Chonburi have climbed 20% year-on-year, underscoring the province's enduring appeal for Thai tourists seeking convenient and varied short-break options.
The growth aligns with a broader trend of travelers revisiting familiar destinations. Hilton's 2025 Travel Trends Report found that 58% of global travelers return to childhood holiday spots to relive cherished memories. Chonburi, with its beaches, islands, and culinary scene, fits this pattern perfectly—offering nostalgia alongside practical advantages like its proximity to Bangkok.
Why Chonburi is winning repeat visits
Chonburi's location, roughly a two-hour drive from Bangkok, makes it an ideal escape for weekend trips or extended stays. Its diverse attractions—from the bustling streets of Pattaya to the quieter islands of Koh Si Chang and Koh Larn—cater to a wide range of traveler profiles. Families, couples, and groups of friends can all find something new on each visit, whether it's a seaside retreat, an island-hopping adventure, or a food-focused itinerary.
Traveloka's country manager for Thailand and Singapore, Thipaporn Daungmak, attributes the surge to travelers' desire for flexibility. "Travellers are looking for flexibility to take more frequent breaks without having to travel too far. Chonburi fits naturally into this behaviour," she said. This sentiment is echoed in Traveloka's broader booking data, which shows a growing preference for domestic and short-haul trips across Southeast Asia.
The province's ability to reinvent itself while retaining its core charm is key. "Chonburi offers a mix of familiar comforts and new discoveries," Daungmak added. "Whether it's a first visit or a return trip, travelers can always find a fresh angle."
Implications for the travel trade
For hoteliers and tour operators, the data signals an opportunity to package Chonburi as a repeat-visit destination. The province's accommodation sector, which ranges from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts, is well-positioned to capture this demand. Traveloka's platform, which has been expanding its hotel inventory through partnerships like the one with ETG, is making it easier for suppliers to reach domestic travelers.
The trend also reflects a wider shift in Thai domestic tourism. Traveloka's Q3 2026 Index highlighted Khao Yai and Koh Chang as leading destinations, and Chonburi's rise is part of this broader pattern of travelers seeking accessible, diverse experiences. As Asia-Pacific drives global travel spending, destinations like Chonburi are well-placed to benefit from the region's momentum.
For travel agents, the data suggests a need to promote Chonburi not just as a one-time beach getaway, but as a destination with layered appeal. "We're seeing travelers book multiple trips to the same province, each with a different focus," Daungmak noted. "That's a powerful message for the trade."
The renewed interest in Chonburi demonstrates that established destinations can remain relevant by combining familiarity with new experiences. As domestic travel continues to grow, provinces like Chonburi are proving that convenience and variety are just as important as novelty.
