Mitsui Ocean Cruises has officially welcomed its second vessel, Mitsui Ocean Sakura, into service following a traditional naming ceremony in Yokohama on 19 September 2026. The ship, formerly Seabourn Sojourn, joins the fleet alongside Mitsui Ocean Fuji, doubling the line's capacity in the premium Japanese cruise segment.
To mark the launch, Cruise Traveller, Mitsui's exclusive Australian representative, has introduced a series of fly-free packages for 2027 voyages around Japan. The offer applies to five new itineraries departing in April and September 2027, with fares starting at A$8,799 per person. A nine-night journey from Yokohama timed to Japan's Silver Week holiday is priced from A$11,299 per person, including shore excursions and selected onboard amenities. Bookings must be confirmed by 30 November 2026 to qualify for complimentary return flights from Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane.
All-suite comfort and intimate scale
Mitsui Ocean Sakura accommodates 458 guests in all-suite staterooms, each with ocean views. Its compact size allows access to smaller, less-visited Japanese ports that larger vessels cannot reach, offering a more immersive exploration of the country's coastal destinations.
Captain Satoshi Ninomiya, the ship's inaugural master, underscored the company's commitment to safety and hospitality during the ceremony, describing the line's mission as “connecting hearts and sailing safely.”
Mitsui Ocean Cruises President Tsunemichi Mukai emphasised the brand's focus on cultural authenticity. “We hope to provide special experiences that remain with our guests throughout their lives,” he said. The ship features Japanese-inspired amenities such as Sushi Bar Shiosai and an open-air footbath, designed to deliver a distinctly local atmosphere.
Joe O’Sullivan, Managing Director of Cruise Traveller, highlighted the appeal of Mitsui Ocean Cruises for travellers seeking a genuine connection to Japan. The free-flight incentive is intended to reduce the cost barrier for Australian guests, making the brand more accessible ahead of the 2027 season.
The launch of Mitsui Ocean Sakura comes as cruise lines continue to expand their presence in Asia. Earlier this year, Oceania Cruises opened bookings for its 2028 world voyage, signalling sustained demand for long-haul and destination-focused itineraries. Meanwhile, Swan Hellenic's Cruising4Oceans joined the UN-backed GlobalCoast network, reflecting the industry's growing attention to sustainable travel.
For travel agents, the new Mitsui ship represents an opportunity to offer clients a premium, culturally immersive cruise product in one of the world's most sought-after destinations. The fly-free packages, combined with the ship's intimate scale, could appeal to discerning travellers seeking an alternative to larger mainstream vessels.
Mitsui Ocean Cruises, a subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, has positioned itself as a niche player in the luxury cruise market, focusing on Japanese hospitality and itineraries that showcase the country's lesser-known ports. With two ships now in operation, the line is poised to strengthen its foothold in the Asia-Pacific cruise sector.
Agents interested in the fly-free offer should note the 30 November 2026 booking deadline and the limited availability of complimentary flights. The packages are expected to be popular given the strong demand for Japan cruises in recent years.
