Sheraton Hotels & Resorts has entered Papua New Guinea with the opening of the Sheraton Port Moresby Stanley Hotel & Suites, marking Marriott International's second property in the country. The 394-key hotel sits in Port Moresby's central business and government district, five minutes from Jacksons International Airport and directly connected to the Vision City Mega Mall.
The property brings a significant meetings and events capacity to the market, with more than 2,500 square metres of flexible space, including the largest ballroom in Papua New Guinea. For leisure and business travellers alike, the hotel offers a range of dining options, from the exclusive Silverleaf restaurant to the dynamic &More by Sheraton, which transitions from a coffee shop to a bar as the day progresses. Wellness facilities include an infinity swimming pool and a comprehensive fitness centre.
Strategic expansion in the Pacific
Cristiano Rinaldi, Chief Lodging Product & Services Officer for Asia Pacific excluding China at Marriott International, said: "The opening of Sheraton Port Moresby Stanley Hotel & Suites marks a significant milestone as we introduce one of Marriott International's most global brands to Papua New Guinea."
The hotel is positioned as a central gathering place for both international travellers and the local community, with spaces designed for connection and productivity. General Manager Shin Ching expressed enthusiasm about the property's transformative renovation and its role in elevating Papua New Guinea's hospitality sector.
This debut strengthens Sheraton's footprint in the Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific region, reinforcing Marriott International's commitment to growth in the Pacific. The grand opening event is slated for later this year, with the hotel already operational.
The move reflects broader momentum in Pacific hospitality, following other recent openings such as IHG's first Kimpton in Indonesia and Langham's upcoming Bangkok debut. For travel professionals, the new Sheraton offers a fresh option for corporate and MICE clients in a market that has historically had limited upscale inventory.
Port Moresby's status as a hub for resource and government activity makes the hotel's location particularly strategic. The proximity to Jacksons International Airport and the direct link to Vision City Mega Mall provide convenience for both business and leisure travellers.
Marriott International now operates two properties in Papua New Guinea, with the Sheraton joining the existing portfolio. The company's Pacific expansion continues to target key gateway cities and emerging business destinations.
For agents and tour operators, the new property adds a reliable upscale option in Port Moresby, with the largest ballroom in the country positioning it as a prime venue for conferences and events. The hotel's dining and wellness amenities also cater to the growing number of international visitors to Papua New Guinea.
As the Pacific region sees increased travel demand, the Sheraton Port Moresby Stanley Hotel & Suites is set to play a pivotal role in accommodating both business and leisure guests, while supporting the local hospitality industry's development.
