As European golf courses enter their dormant season, a new coastal layout in Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as the winter alternative for serious players. Shura Links, located on Shura Island in the Red Sea, opened with a championship-caliber course designed by Brian Curley, and is now courting international golfers seeking warm-weather play without sacrificing course quality.

The par-72 layout weaves through 13 holes set against active mangrove corridors and white sand dunes, blending the natural coastal terrain with strategic shot-making demands. The design has already earned recognition, ranking 39th in Golf World's Top 100 X-Factor Courses in the World, a list that highlights courses with distinctive character and memorable holes.

Luxury stays and connectivity

Shura Island is part of the larger Red Sea destination, which has been developed as a high-end tourism hub. The island hosts 11 luxury resorts, including The Red Sea EDITION and Four Seasons properties, giving golfers a range of accommodation options from contemporary to classic. The integration of golf with these hospitality brands is a deliberate move to attract affluent travelers who expect both sport and comfort.

Access has been a key focus. Red Sea International Airport now offers direct flights from major European cities such as London, Paris, and Milan, as well as from Malé in the Maldives. This connectivity reduces travel time significantly, making a weekend golf getaway feasible for European players. The airport's expansion is part of a broader strategy to open the region to international tourism, and it aligns with similar connectivity pushes across the Gulf, such as new direct services linking Asian leisure hubs.

Beyond the fairways, the destination offers a range of activities that appeal to travel companions and non-golfers. The Red Sea's reefs are accessible for diving and snorkeling, while kitesurfing and other water sports are available. Inland, the rugged terrain invites hiking and stargazing, providing a full itinerary for visitors who want more than 18 holes.

Jon Brook, General Manager of Shura Links, emphasized the seasonal advantage: “When northern courses go dormant, Shura Island comes alive. You get absolute championship quality without the cold-weather compromises.” That message is aimed squarely at tour operators and travel advisors who manage golf clients during the winter months.

The development also taps into a growing trend of golf tourism in the Middle East, where countries like the UAE and Qatar have long hosted international events. Saudi Arabia's entry into this space adds a new option for agents and operators looking to diversify their portfolios. The combination of a top-tier course, luxury accommodations, and improving air links makes Shura Links a credible contender for winter golf packages.

For travel professionals, the key selling points are clear: a championship course designed by a recognized architect, a cluster of high-end hotels, and direct flights from key European markets. The destination also benefits from the broader Red Sea project, which has been developed with sustainability in mind, a factor that increasingly influences booking decisions among luxury travelers.

As the Mediterranean season winds down, Shura Links is positioning itself as the premier winter golf destination in the region. With its combination of sport, luxury, and natural beauty, it offers a compelling alternative to traditional winter golf hubs in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. For agents and operators, the opportunity lies in bundling golf with the destination's other attractions, creating itineraries that appeal to both players and their companions.

The course's inclusion in international rankings and the backing of major hotel brands lend credibility to its marketing. As more flights are added and awareness grows, Shura Links could become a regular stop on the global golf circuit, much like other emerging destinations that have leveraged infrastructure investment to attract niche tourism.

For now, the focus is on converting interest into bookings. The winter season is the prime window, and with the course already open and hotels operational, the destination is ready to welcome its first wave of international golfers. Travel advisors looking for a fresh product to offer their clients may find Shura Links a worthwhile addition to their list.
