The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) has unveiled its first major promotional push in Southeast Asia with a week-long campaign in Bangkok, running from 6 to 12 July 2026. Dubbed 'WestK in Bangkok', the initiative is designed to position Hong Kong's 40-hectare cultural district as a premier destination for cultural tourism and business investment.

Supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Bangkok and Invest Hong Kong, the campaign features a travel trade luncheon and a networking dinner with business leaders. BTS Group serves as the Promotional Partner, while Siam Paragon is the Venue Partner. The events aim to foster deeper ties between Hong Kong and Thailand's arts, cultural, and business communities.

Creative Collaboration with Thai Idol Butterbear

A standout element of the campaign is a partnership with Thai idol Butterbear, featuring creative installations at Siam Paragon. These include immersive photo checkpoints and a stamp-collection activity designed to engage visitors with the WestK brand. The collaboration underscores WKCDA's strategy to leverage popular culture to attract younger demographics and drive tourism.

Bernard Charnwut Chan, Chairman of WKCDA, stated, “Through ‘WestK in Bangkok’, we aim to demonstrate the District’s ambitious vision of becoming a world-class platform for international cultural exchange.” The campaign also highlights business opportunities within the district, which already houses world-class venues like the M+ museum and the Hong Kong Palace Museum.

Investment and Tourism Growth Ahead of 2027 Opening

With the WestK Performing Arts Centre set to open in 2027, the district will eventually offer 10 theatres, enhancing its appeal for MICE groups and cultural tourists. Betty Fung, CEO of WKCDA, emphasised the district's role in serving not only Hong Kong but the broader Asia region, positioning it as a new cultural tourism landmark.

The campaign comes as Hong Kong intensifies efforts to rebuild its tourism sector post-pandemic. For travel professionals, WestK represents a growing destination for luxury and cultural travel, with potential for loyalty program partnerships and specialised MICE events. The district's location along Victoria Harbourfront also offers opportunities for cruise lines and tour operators to package itineraries.

Industry observers note that WKCDA's targeted outreach in Bangkok aligns with broader trends in Asian tourism, where cultural districts are increasingly used to differentiate destinations. Similar initiatives have been seen in other markets, such as Saudi Arabia's visa reforms and TransNusa's route expansions.

For hoteliers and travel agents, the campaign signals growing demand for cultural experiences in Hong Kong. The collaboration with Butterbear is expected to drive foot traffic to Siam Paragon, offering a model for cross-border destination marketing. As WestK continues to develop, it may become a key selling point for luxury and MICE travel in the region.
