Bangkok restaurateur Craig McLean has long believed that great hospitality is about good food, a good glass of wine, and no rush to leave. At XII Mediterranean on Sathorn Soi 12, that philosophy is entering a new chapter. On Saturday, November 14, the restaurant—pronounced “Twelve”—will unveil a refreshed identity, a new menu, and a renewed commitment to the Mediterranean flavours that first inspired it.
The relaunch is not a departure but a culmination. Over the past four years, McLean and his team have navigated the challenges of opening during the pandemic, explored different culinary directions, and most recently embraced the traditions of Southern French cooking. Now, XII is returning to its Mediterranean roots—not by abandoning that journey, but by bringing the best of it together.
Four years of discovery, one Mediterranean table
The Mediterranean has long been a culinary crossroads, where centuries of trade and cultural exchange have shaped remarkable ingredients and techniques. That diversity is now at the heart of XII's new menu. Rather than following a single country's cuisine, the kitchen draws inspiration from across the coastline, blending much-loved favourites from the original menu with standout ideas developed during its Southern French chapter.
A key development is the expanded use of XII's charcoal oven. More dishes now benefit from the depth and aroma that charcoal imparts—an approach rooted in Mediterranean tradition, where fire, fresh ingredients, and straightforward preparation go hand in hand. Behind that simplicity lies a rigorous sourcing philosophy. McLean, who worked internationally as a breeding livestock exporter and independent food trader before his Bangkok ventures, brings a detailed understanding of quality and provenance to every ingredient selection.
“There is no need to reinvent centuries of Mediterranean cooking,” McLean says. “The challenge is to bring together wonderful dishes, source excellent ingredients, and give them the care and attention they deserve.”
The people behind the experience
Food is only part of the story. The restaurant's refreshed interiors balance rustic Mediterranean warmth with contemporary touches, creating a setting suited to a casual drink, a romantic dinner, or an evening that stretches pleasantly longer than planned. With 25 years of interior design experience, McLean has crafted spaces that encourage relaxation and connection. Indoor and outdoor seating offer versatility, while an experienced head bartender brings Mediterranean wines, creative cocktails, and a carefully considered drinks selection.
But perhaps the most remarkable ingredient at XII is its people. The close-knit hospitality team has been built over 15 years, and McLean is proud that the business did not lose a single team member during the COVID-19 pandemic—a significant achievement in one of the industry's most difficult periods. That continuity translates into familiar faces, genuine warmth, and a sense of welcome that keeps guests returning.
“Good food starts with good ingredients, but great dining is about much more than that,” McLean explains. “It's about making people feel welcome, creating a comfortable atmosphere, and giving them a reason to come back. That's what we want XII Mediterranean to be—a place where people can enjoy wonderful food, share a drink, and simply enjoy being together.”
Same roots, new rhythm
Located on Sathorn Soi 12, a short walk from Saint Louis BTS station, XII Mediterranean offers an inviting escape from the city's pace. The relaunch will be celebrated with an invitation-only gathering on November 14 from 5pm to 8pm, featuring drinks and finger food. For McLean and his team, the occasion is about celebrating everything the past four years have taught them—from the dishes guests return for to the importance of exceptional ingredients, thoughtful surroundings, and the people who make hospitality feel effortless.
The name XII Mediterranean is back, the charcoal oven is playing a bigger role, and the table is set for the next chapter. Same roots, new rhythm.
For travel professionals planning Bangkok itineraries, XII Mediterranean joins a vibrant Sathorn dining scene. Nearby, AWC and IHG are debuting the Ruby brand in the district, while Park Hyatt Bangkok is running a month-long Italian heritage programme. For those flying in, Etihad's A380 now lands daily from Abu Dhabi, and Belavia has added Minsk–Bangkok nonstops.
