Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi), in collaboration with Etihad Airways and key stakeholders, recently convened a high-level trade mission for senior executives from India's travel sector. The initiative underscores the emirate's strategic push to deepen engagement with one of its most vital source markets.
The delegation, composed of leading travel agencies, tour operators, and distribution partners, participated in direct dialogues with Abu Dhabi's tourism leadership to align commercial strategies. Participants also toured the emirate's evolving cultural and tourism landscape, including previews of the upcoming Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum of Abu Dhabi.
Strengthening Air Connectivity and Hospitality Performance
With over 300 weekly flights connecting India and Abu Dhabi, the emirate has recorded a 22% increase in Indian hotel guests over the past year. This growth is underpinned by a robust pipeline of cultural, entertainment, and sporting events planned for 2026, further solidifying Abu Dhabi's appeal as a preferred destination for Indian travellers. Etihad Airways continues to expand its Indian network, offering direct services to key cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai.
The visit aligns with broader regional trends, as seen in Royal Jordanian's efforts to bolster its Amman hub as a Middle East gateway for Indian travellers. Abu Dhabi's strategy, however, focuses on direct destination appeal through a mix of luxury, culture, and family-oriented attractions.
Cultural and Entertainment Pipeline
Abu Dhabi's tourism offering is being significantly enhanced by new cultural landmarks. The Zayed National Museum, designed by Foster + Partners, will showcase the UAE's heritage and vision. The Natural History Museum of Abu Dhabi, set to feature rare specimens and immersive exhibits, adds to the emirate's science and education tourism portfolio. Additionally, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi recently added two DC-themed rides, including a Superman coaster slated for 2028, further diversifying the entertainment landscape.
These developments complement existing attractions like the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, positioning the emirate as a multi-dimensional destination for Indian leisure and business travellers alike.
MICE and Business Travel Opportunities
The trade mission also highlighted Abu Dhabi's growing MICE infrastructure. The emirate's convention centres and hotels are increasingly targeting Indian corporate groups and incentive travel. This focus mirrors global trends, such as MEETINGS 2026 securing a three-year run at NZICC in New Zealand, underscoring the competitive MICE landscape across destinations.
DCT Abu Dhabi's partnership with Etihad also includes initiatives like free medical insurance for international visitors, a move that enhances traveller confidence and supports the emirate's accessibility goals.
Strategic Outlook
The visit reinforces Abu Dhabi's commitment to fostering strong partnerships with Indian travel leaders. As the emirate continues to expand its cultural and entertainment attractions, it aims to attract more visitors from India, contributing to regional economic growth and cultural exchange. With a clear focus on quality tourism and sustained airlift, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a leading Middle Eastern destination for the Indian market.
